Identity formation refers to the development of a clear-cut personality of an individual at a particular phase in life. The process helps to show a distinction from one person to another based on uniqueness and continuity. Identity formation is a recommended function among students to prevent them from experiencing problems over the years. A well-formed character gives students a sense of belonging, in that they can participate in various roles without going through a difference in personality (Côté, 2016). More so, it is crucial for the formation of a conscience, spiritual development, healthy relationships, and personal accomplishments and boosts the self-esteem of students. The foundation of identity formation is established by parents through parenting practices throughout the development of the child and is enhanced by teachers during their interaction with the children in the classroom practices. In this paper, I will discuss how student identity formation is achieved without the need of forcing students on a set of expectation or values during their psycho-social development. Teachers are mandated to develop a sense of security among their students as a foundation for identity formation. Security means that the students will acquire a sense of trust, confidence, and safety that will allow the students to develop capabilities of making personal decisions over the years.  The students need to be taught that there is no guilt of having information to themselves and the ability to originate their plans and conquer their tasks (Mehdi, 2012). For instance, students should be taught of the circles that their trust should circulate as, self, intimates, friends, acquaintances and strangers. Above all, the students need to be informed that it is of preference to place their information in the special category, to reduce the burden of keeping secrets and as a way of getting help. More so, the students need to be informed that the best time to share their personal information with others is only when they are ready and have someone they trust in mind. Additionally, they should be aware of the consequences of sharing the information. Educators need to provide a supportive learning and living environment for the students, that value and respect them. The schools should work with the government and the community as a whole to allow a positive identity formation. More importantly, there is the need for the school to become an important part of the community and develop relationships with the parents and the community organizations. Through the partnerships, the students can be engaged in decision making through opportunities and responsibilities that develop their skills. The teachers should also create a friendly school environment that allows for optimal growth, good mental health and raised self-esteem (Mehdi, 2012). To enhance the self-esteem of the students, the teachers need to understand child development and the appropriate techniques for supporting, praising and encouraging the students. In conclusion, identity formation is vital in ensuring that the students have a tight relationship and connection with the community as a whole. The students get emotionally stronger, gain confidence and can deal with the challenges and difficulties they face which are an essential foundation for learning and development. Educators need to discover their role in the psycho-social development of their students’ good organization on security, autonomy, and initiative. These features will carry the students throughout their adult life in making the right decisions. Besides, identify formation allows the creation of self-efficacy where students develop a sense of belief that they can achieve on whatever they pursue. For the development of self-identity, students need chances to make choices, work on different activities and roles and interaction with a wide array of individuals. A well-defined and appropriate environment is also a necessity for identity formation. Above all, it helps the students develop a spirit of care and responsibility for the community they live in, and thus become beneficial individuals to the society.
