It is clear that the outbreak of norovirus in the developed world poses a high threat of gastrointestinal complications leading to significant numbers of hospital visits, hospitalization and even deaths. It is, however, appalling to note that sanitization measures like handwashing can help control such outbreaks . This paper argues that there is a dire need for implementation of more aggressive sanitation practices regarding handwashing after visiting the bathroom. This is simply because diseases like those of the Norovirus are easily transmitted once someone is exposed and he or she does not take measures to cleanliness or disinfection. People of all ages are also able to spread the viral gastroenteritis disease in varied settings including clinics, restaurants, schools and any other places where they interact with others. It must be unnderstood that the disease-causing organisms usually have high community prevalence and thus need to be controlled.
I must also confess that I have ever witnessed an employee at a restaurant failing to wash her hands once she made use of the restroom. Undeniably, I was very offended by that act of the employee. It was evident that she had little regard for the health and wellbeing of the customers at the restaurant. For a moment, I thought that she had no knowledge of the dangers of her conduct and behaviour on others. Then again, I wondered how that could be since the dissemination of information regarding personal hygiene at such places of work remains of emphasis in regions within the country. For a moment, I though the employee was an immigrant from a country wherein the people were not enlightened of the dangers of such actions. I also believed that the employees at the restaurant, were not holders of Basic Food Hygiene Certificates. They took the matter of food safety for granted, endangering the lives and health of the customers in the process. Overall, I felt very upset by the act to the level that I had to leave the restaurant since I was yet to order a meal.
