The book harry potter and half-blood prince brings out two very courageous characters whose self-sacrifice goes beyond dangerous means to protect their friends. One of the character who provide the clearest example of self- sacrifice is Harry, who is the main character in the book. At his youthfulness, he understands that it is his duty to protect his friends by availing himself to Lord Voldemort and fighting him head on. After noticing how his friends had suffered to protect him, he decides to risk his life on their behalf. He ensures the safety of his friends by leaving the vial with them to protect themselves in case of any trouble arising (Rowling, 2015. He then binds his friend goodbye and walks in a dangerous dark forest without any protection (Rowling, 2015). Also, he understands that his end is near and, thus, decides to end it sooner to save his friends when he confronts Voldemort’s and allows him to strike him with the killing curse

Albus Dumbledore is another character whose self-sacrifice comes out very clearly. Constantly, he is seen to want to protect the lives of Harry, Hogwarts and Draco (Rowling, 2015). One of the incidence is seen when he drinks goblets of poisonous Voldemort’s poison, and insists that harry pour more into his mouth so that he can destroy horcrux and Voldemort’s souls (Scalar, 2017). Also, he protects Draco’s soul from the eternal soul damage of destroying a man’s life. He knew that Draco had been given an order by lord Voldemort to kill him and so he struck a deal with his friend’s snape to do it instead of Draco. This is because his friend knew that he had one year to live after he had worn the cursed horcrux ring and, thus, killing him would not result to his eternal self-condemnation.

The original motive for Harry was to destroy Voldemort because he had killed his parents (Scalar, 2017). The primary motive for Dumbledore, on other hand, was to protect Harry and keep him from the battle because he considered him more valuable than himself. Other motives from both of them included gaining trust and loyalty from their friends and protecting each other form harm. The primary motive for both of them was to protect their loved ones and, hence, both sacrificed their lives to safe their friends from destruction (Scalar, 2017). Evidently, Dumbledore drank a lot of Voldemort’s poison so that he became too weak to resist his death.
