According to Bali (2015), sometimes many coaches and athletes neglect psychological preparation before they participate in competitive sports. Athletes are always under pressure to excel in competitions, but at the same time, they have to compete with other equally formidable or strong opponents. Quite often, before a competition begins, most athletes are tense or anxious. The pressure of excelling in their respective sports usually hangs on their shoulders and may often be too great to bear. Secondly, losing can also have a significant psychological effect on the mental wellbeing of the athletes. Some athletes cannot just simply bear with defeat, especially if there are high stakes and expectations involved in the competition.
Bali (2015) also states that some competitions such as golf tournaments or tennis could be 90 percent psychological. Therefore, apart from just preparing in terms of tactics and strategies to participate in competitions, it is also prudent for athletes to embrace practices that could boost their mental wellbeing. Such practices could go a long way, in enhancing their relaxation as well as mental strength. This research topic is important because stakeholders such as coaches, athletes as well as individuals involved in fitness and wellbeing of athletes can take into consideration some of the strategies that can enhance the mental wellbeing of athletes. Apart from participating in the game, it is also important to ensure that athletes are mentally stable, less anxious and relaxed while in competition and even after the competitions.
