Attribution theory seeks to give an explanation of the cause of an event or behavior and the reason why people do what they do. Further, the approach examines the kind of information that is collected and how the data is combined to come up with a casual judgment as illustrated in the following definitions;

Stability: Stable: This is when someone’s behavior or event is due to unchanging factors. An example is when a player is injured; it will affect the entire team performance.

Stability: unstable- This is when an individual’s behavior is due to temporary factors. An example is fatigue in athletics where two athletes run and one wins, and the other does not.

Locus of causality: Internal – It is the process of assigning the cause of behavior to some personal attributes rather than outside forces. An example is when a team is playing football, and they are not interested, or they believe they cannot win.

Locus of causality: external– It is the process of assigning the cause of behavior to some outside behavior than personality traits. An example two people in swimming competition, the person who has been trained well will do well than a person not well trained.

Locus of control: in one's control: It is when one’s behavior can be easily altered with if one wishes to do so. An example is a player who refuses to do practice because they agreed with the rest of the team not to,

Locus of control: Out of one’s control, it happens when one's behavior is not easily influenced. An example is in safari rally drivers on a race who must speed to win.

Ways of Helping Lucille Regain her Motivation

Most of the reasons Lucile is not doing well are causes that can be controlled; except for the minor injuries and field conditions. To adapt to situations she cannot change, she needs to accept that she cannot control it, and remember that injuries are healed with time. Bad weather or a bad field is the causes of field conditions. Weather is seasonal, and Lucille should not consider it as a discouraging factor. Being focused should also be a motivating factor for Lucille. Giving up and losing interest does not help but instead, it opens doors for giving excuses and blaming others. Like in the case study, Lucille is blaming her teammates for not passing her the ball, but it may be as results of her attitude and lack of interest when playing. She needs to have the right attitude for the game and work harder to find the ball than waiting for the ball to be passed to her.

She needs to link her success to her hard work by believing that she can do it. She should be willing to seek help from coaches, finding more time for practice so that she can improve her speed, shooting and passing the ball. Researching how to score goals, how to be tough, attending workshops on the same, and looking for mentors will be helpful. Lucille should also be complimented on the excellent work she does, doing enough practice to the extent of getting scholarship deserve a good feedback to encourage her. She needs to be motivated by being given all the help she wants, like being taken to hospital when injured and encouraging the teammates to support her.
