Having a competitive advantage over rival hiring companies is an essential factor in the process of acquiring the best talent and the brightest minds in the labor market. There are two ways that a company can gain a competitive edge over other competing and hiring companies. The first way is by establishing and displaying an attractive company culture that markets not only the company as a conducive working environment but also its brand. The Global Recruiting Trends Survey of 2013 by LinkedIn showed that approximately 72 percent of mobile visitors expected a description of the company’s culture in its career site. A company’s culture that matches with the candidate's interests stands a higher chance of being preferred over the rest. Indeed, candidates expect a culture that promotes enjoyable working environments and where they can fit personally and in terms of their skillset. A perfect example of such a company is Google considering the millions of resumes they receive annually.

Another way of gaining a competitive edge is through offering an exciting candidate experience. Experience is essential in the hiring process in the sense that a candidate will always analyze the hiring process as an indication of how they will be treated and the expectations of the company. To this end, a candidate will favor a company with amazing candidate experience. Overall, technology has played a fundamental role in the hiring process. Indeed, it is through technology that potential candidates read reviews regarding the candidate experience of a particular company thereby deciding whether to apply for a position in the company or not. Moreover, through the internet, mobile phones, or computers, potential candidates access the career websites of various companies and are able to determine those with the best culture that matches their interests.

In the scenario concerning Alice and Mary as potential candidates, Mary would be the best fit for the sales clerk position. A sales clerk position requires excellent communications and interpersonal skills and great customer relations. Mary fits the bill despite her little work experience. Sales is a continuous process since individuals are in constant need of purchasing products or services. To this end, a flexible work schedule as in the case of Mary is perfect for the position. The phrase ‘the customer is always right’ is common in sales and marketing. In this regard, an obstinate mind is perilous to the company which makes Mary a perfect fit for the position. Teamwork is also essential in optimizing sales, and as such, a candidate who loves working with other individuals such as Mary is preferable as opposed to the obstinate Alice.
