Many organizations face challenges when selecting the right employee to meet specific business or company needs. In a bid to choose the right employee for the job, a company’s employee selection process has to be well-thought-out. This process entails a vigorous procedure of matching the right employees to the required organizational requirements. The importance of executing these procedural steps is to ensure that the selected candidates deliver quality performance hence improving the companies’ financial projections. Employment encompasses two key phases; recruitment and selection. Recruitment is mostly conceptualized as a process whereby all potential candidates are allowed to apply for vacant positions. Selection, on the other hand, is a process whereby only the competent candidates are chosen while others are rejected. This paper is aimed at exploring the different components of the selection process while selecting the most critical component.

The employee selection process is divided into several key components. These include preliminary interviews, application blanks, written tests, employment interviews, medical examinations, and appointment letter s (Prakash, 2019) . This implies that the process takes place in a systematic manner. In the first step, preliminary interviews are conducted whereby candidates who have not attained the minimum eligibility criteria are rejected ( Chungyalpa & Karishma , 2016) . The rejection is drawn from a close examination of the candidate’s academic credentials, competencies, skills, and interests. Other credentials, like background checks, criminal records, and certificates of ethical conduct, are also examined.

During the preliminary interview stage, candidates are given a summary of what the company is all about and what the job profile entails. Candidates are examined to determine their knowledge of the company. This component is considered the most crucial since potential candidates are allowed to proceed to the next stage of the selection process (Prakash, 2019) . Only the competent candidates make it through this stage while the rest are turned down.

Effective employee selection procedures are essential if a company is to hire a skilled and competent employee who meets the demands of today's workplace. All the components of the selection process should be treated with the same seriousness in order to ensure that a company only engages a capable workforce. However, more emphasis should be dedicated to the preliminary interview stage since it is at this stage that the best candidates are retained while the rest are let go.
