Given the constant change and advancement of technology, the recruitment process has evolved over the years and continues to do so. Recruitment is one of the initial steps in the hiring process that organizations use to hire new qualified employees. Among the plethora of ways in which a company can recruit new qualified personnel, two stand out, the company website and referrals. These two approaches represent the general trend in the contemporary hiring process. Given the abounding popularity of the internet and technology, it is no surprise that almost every firm makes use of this platform to advertise for job vacancies. This method is often used by organizations that receive more applications than they can handle, for instance, the Southwest Airlines which in 2016 received 342, 664 applications but only hired 7, 207 (Doyle, 2017). The same can be said for Google which is speculated to receive millions of resumes annually.

Referrals occur when an employee of a company recommends an applicant for an advertised position. By using this method, an applicant is highly likely to be recruited especially if the referee has a good reputation. This form of recruitment often happens in companies that give bonuses or incentives to employees whose referrals are hired. Comparatively, referrals are the most effective as opposed to advertising through the website since it streamlines the hiring process in the sense that the referee knows the company and the type of individual required for the position. Additionally, employers prefer this method because the candidate already has a recommendation from one of the company’s employees.

The two selected occupations for discussion are an animal scientist and food scientist and technologist. The descriptions for the former include studying nutritional requirements of animals and animal feed materials, writing or orally presenting research findings to the scientific community and the public, as well as analyzing data or information (National Center for O*NET Development, 2018). Some of the skills required for the occupation include knowledge of scientific or analytical software, competency in communication and writing, and biological as well as chemistry knowledge. On the other hand, a food scientist and technologist duties include checking raw materials for stability or maturity for processed and finished products for quality, safety, and nutritional value, staying updated on new regulations and current trends regarding food science, production as well as processing. Other requirements include knowledge on scientific or analytical software, inductive reasoning, excellent writing and listening skills and biology background (National Center for O*NET Development, 2018).

To make the occupation descriptions more interesting and attractive, the advertisers should have used a more eye-catching font rather than the dark-themed font that portrays dullness. Additionally, the font size of the descriptive headings should be bigger. For instance, Doyle, (2017) uses an averagely bigger font which makes the article attractive and exciting to read. The same idea can be used in the occupation descriptions. The images elaborating the descriptions are captivating and easily capture the applicants’ interest potentially culminating in them applying for the position. Moreover, imagery illustrates friendliness as opposed to volumes of data as observed on the website.
