A descriptive essay works if readers get a feeling that they have seen, smelt, felt, or otherwise have experienced whatever it was described in the essay. If you’re planning on writing a descriptive essay, then here are the steps which you can follow:

Pick a Topic

Sometimes the topic will be given. As mentioned before, a descriptive essay can describe almost anything. Remember that your aim in writing the essay is to make them see, hear, feel, experience whatever it is that you are trying to describe.

It’s time to jumpstart your paper!

You need to pick the right words that can capture the imagination of anyone who will read your essay. The essay should also be structured in a way that will make sense to the readers.

When you have the topic, you can then think about the qualities of that thing that you want to describe. What are its most vivid qualities that other people will find interesting? Think about the qualities that evoke memories and emotions. It’s not just the physical attributes of the topic that you want to describe.

Create an Outline

If you want to make the writing process easier for you, then you need to create an outline. Your outline is the plan on how your essay is going to flow. Plan on what each paragraph is going to be about.

Not only will the outline make it easier for you to write the essay but it can make the whole piece more coherent since it will have a clear structure.

List Down the Sensations

On top of your essay outline, you should also create a table with five different columns. Each column is for a different sense and under each column, you should write how you felt or the exact sensation that you have for the topic. You can use that table later on as you start writing your essay.

Start Writing

After all your preparation is done, you can proceed with writing your descriptive essay. When doing the first draft of the essay, don’t worry too much about getting all the details or all the other aspects of the essay right since you will be revising it. The important thing is to get started.

Refer to the outline and the table which you have created, but keep in mind that you are aiming to describe something. Your readers should see, hear, and smell whatever it is that you’re trying to describe.

Revision

Once done with the initial draft, the next step is for you to revise what you have written. You can do this immediately after finishing the first draft but ideally, you should give it some time before you go back to it.

Maybe step away for a few hours, or maybe even a day, so that when you start revising it, you will get a different perspective. This is also the time for you to check for grammar and spelling mistakes.

Let’s say that the topic which you have chosen to describe in your essay is your last family vacation. You can outline your essay like this:

Discuss the decision of your family to go on a vacation and your destination.

How you felt while you are on your way to your destination.

The different sights that you saw during the vacation.

The different noise and music that you experienced.

The food that you ate during the vacation.

Your overall feeling about your vacation.

You can further break it down as to how each dish that you tasted or how the different places that you visited looked like. As you can see, it’s a simple outline that gives your essay a structure and you can add more details to it.

When writing a descriptive essay, you need to follow the general advice given to most writers and that ís, “show don’t tell”. That means you don’t just tell your readers about how you felt, you have to make them feel the same way too about your topic. That can be quite tricky to achieve that, but with practice, you can do it.
