For the past six months, business in downtown Terrapin has reduced as a result of the new and strict parking control measures. Although the approach is good and useful in controlling parking, it has negatively impacted business. Since the plan was implemented, my business has fallen by 20 percent. Before the implementation of the more stringent rules, the business was doing well because customers using their private vehicles would park near the business without any problems. However, with the new regulations, I have lost many customers hence a decline in business. Loss of customers has been the same case for the majority of other store owners affected by the new regulations. If the situation persists, some other store owners, including me, might be forced out of business.
A successful business is one that cannot only attract clients but also retain them. However, with parking problems, a business can experience many challenges in the long run. Although I have several clients who purchase small amounts of products, most of my customers are individuals who purchase large amounts of goods. Carrying the goods on a bike or by hand to their houses may not be possible because of the large amounts. As a result, they have been forced to make purchases from other stores elsewhere where parking control is not strict. Majority of customers who drive tends to be wealthier compared to those who walk. Also, cars have large trunks that can accommodate a lot of goods. Individuals without cars spend approximately $160 per month while those with cars spend roughly $200 on purchases at the store every month.

The reason for establishing a business is to make a profit. If the business does not generate revenue as anticipated, closing down or relocating are some of the possible options. My store and other affected store in downtown Terrapin contribute to the city's economy. We pay taxes, which are essential for the city's sustenance, growth, and development. A decline in business is not only affecting store owners' revenue, but the city council's revenue also. Since the implementation of the tougher parking control regulations, I have witnessed two business people in the area who closed their businesses due to a decline in the number of customers and relocated to a neighboring city where parking regulations are less strict. Less number of businesses means less tax revenue for the city council, and this may, in turn, make it impossible for city authority to offer the required services and implement development projects in the city because of reduced revenue from business taxes.
Currently, a significant number of store owners are on the verge of closing or relocating to other areas as a result of the reduced business cause by the parking problem. Closing down more stores will not only affect the owners, their family members, and those employed in the stores only but the local economy too. The current parking regulations can be revised so that there is minimum parking regulation. The area is characterized by a population that is highly industrious and, therefore, does not have much time to spend walking or cycling to the store. Reduced parking control would prevent loss of revenue for both businesses in downtown Terrapin as well as suppression of the local economy. I am, therefore, appealing to the city council to revise the new parking control approach and implement a less strict approach. The move will help other store owners, and I continue with the business and also benefit the local economy through the taxes remitted to the city council. The local business community will benefit from less parking control while at the same time, benefit the local city council.
I understand that my request may seem like an inconvenience to the city council's plans for the city of Terrapin, but doing something to address the issue would benefit every person in the city. The benefits of reduced parking control are immense to the city's dwellers and the local economy. Current businesses in the area will continue to grow and attract other entrepreneurs in downtown Terrapin. Consequently, this will result in the improved socioeconomic status of the city dwellers as well as more taxes for the city council and improved economy. Convenience is crucial for the city's inhabitants, and since the city council is supposed to address the needs of those living in the city, addressing this problem is essential. Although a total overhaul of the new approach might seem time and resource consuming for the city council, it is worth the effort. I know that the approach was meant for the good of the city, but it has negatively impacted a sensitive aspect of the city's inhabitants and economy. By making adjustments to the new parking control approach, the city council would create a conducive business environment.
I, therefore, request that the issue be addressed as quickly as possible so that business resumes as usual since this will prevent businesses on the verge of closing, including mine from closing. It is an urgent matter, and I am at this moment requesting the city council of Terrapin to accord it the weight it deserves and revise the new parking control approach so that it also favors the business community in the city. Please look into the problem by the end of this month (February) to prevent further losses.
Yours Sincerely,
