In the 1960s, the music business was mainly dominated by men with women being viewed as consumers even with the presence of many female songwriters. Singing was considered a leisure time for girls. The first wave of female pop singers broke out in the late 1960s. However, the climax of the pop music performance by women was felt in the ‘00s, with music stars such as Beyoncé, Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson dominating the stage. However, in the midst of all this, some female singers still managed to have their way in the music industry.

There are quite some influential female pop singers who have shaped the music industry for women in many ways. Female singers such as Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Carole King among others were some of the most influential pop musicians. Feminism has also played a key role in the pop music. For instance, the Riot grrrl is a movement that started in the 1990s in Olympia, Washington State. It is mainly linked to the third wave feminism. The group served as a platform where women issues were raised. Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill are original bands which are associated with Riot grrrl movement.

Women in the ‘00s ruled the stage by redefining their persona and performance. They inspired their female fans by demonstrating power and confidence on the stage. This has led to an increased rate of feminism in the music industry. A lot of women today write and produce music with a huge following to add on top. In comparison to men, women have performed quite well today as a result of feminism in the music industry. As evidenced by US Billboard 100, women have evolved significantly since the 1960s.
