Motivation of employees has for long been viewed as one of the best means through which an organization can get to attain better performance. People often feel appreciated whenever they are complemented for the good work done or offered a reward for their excellent performance. In fact, whenever a reward is defined with a specific requirement for individuals to do something in return, competition ensues as people try to outdo each other. This analysis seeks to establish what actually motivates individuals and also offer an elaboration on whether motivation works in all cases.
In the course of watching the video, I was astounded to learn that in the event that a task assigned to an individual called for rudimentary cognitive skill, offering a larger reward led to poor performance ( The RSA, 2010, 2.06). This contradicts the idea that offering high rewards act as an incentive for motivation. It is an exception which shows that the idea does not apply in all situations. Once one gets above rudimentary cognitive skill the whole idea is reversed.

Another significant element that stood out was the idea that paying people enough acts as a motivator. This is due to the fact that sufficient pay ascertains that people are not thinking about money and are instead focusing on the work. Besides, employees should be rewarded for coming up with creative ideas.
Also, the third interesting fact was that autonomy mastery and purpose are the three factors that are capable of leading to better performance and personal satisfaction. Autonomy pertains to a person`s desire to be self-directed ( The RSA, 2010, 5.20). Self-direction contributes towards engagement in a work environment. Mastery, on the other hand, pertains to getting better at something. Challenging mastery leads individuals to make a significant contribution. People are also purpose maximizing entities; implying that they have to feel a great urge to do whatever it is that they are involved in.
There is no doubt that rewards act as a motivation incentive for me. They do not necessarily have to be in monetary kind, however, if they happen to be endearing then I will be in a position to work better and produce the best results possible. It also feels good to be complemented for doing something good. This makes me feel that I should do even better so that I can get to experience the feeling once more.
In my current organization, financial incentives appear to have the greatest bearing compared to all other forms of reward. Whenever people are promised a raise in their salary based on their performance, many will work towards attaining the set goals while keeping their eyes on the prize. Additionally, promotions help in boosting individuals` ego at work (Triv estenx, 2014). Whenever an opportunity presents itself, everyone appears to be working hard so that they can show that they deserve the reward better than any other employee.
