According to Wink Walter, Jesus used three examples to teach against the use of nonviolence even in the most of compromising situations. The first example he used was turning of the other cheek (Pg.99). Quoting Jesus from the book of Mathew chapter 5 verses 39, Walter states the principle of giving the left cheek once the right one is slapped. In this statement, he explains the disgust that comes with left hand backhand slap. In general, the backhand is not a move to injure, rather to insult and degrade. In short, what Jesus was trying to teach reflects Gandhi’s teaching; the first principle of nonviolent action is in the noncooperation with anything whatsoever with humiliating effect (pg. 99). This was imploring the believers to find a third way that was neither cowardly compliance nor violent retaliation.

The second example he used was cited from the book of Deuteronomy 24: 10-13. This was a story of a poor man who used the court’s set law to defend himself. The moral lesson of this story was to teach the violated the mode of using a situation to their advantage instead of resulting to violence. Moreover, walking naked publicly was a taboo. This means, there is an option of unmasking the entire system and revolt against pretense. This will give others a voice to speak too therefore solving the situation nonviolently.

Finally, Jesus taught about going the second mile. This teaching revolved around carrying the soldier’s load an extra distance. Since the carrying of the load was a forced step, the soldier will be confused on what is happening and what the victim is up to. This teaching was meant to help a victim restore their own dignity by pretending they haven’t been offended (Pg. 100). This was meant to be a way of seizing the moral initiative and assertion of humanity. It was also to enable the victim break the bond of ridicule and humiliation.
