In examining a music piece, it is essential that one takes into consideration most of the instruments that are used and when they are introduced during the performance. It is also necessary to note whether or not the different instruments harmonize to create a single rhythm that is pleasant to listen to. In this essay, a performance by John Adams, Short Ride in a Fast Machine is analyzed using the criteria above to help understand it better.

The performance begins with the playing of the woodblock that is later followed by trumpets, and then other instruments such as the trombone, the Tumbass violins, drums, and double bass follow. The combination of all these instruments forms a melody that is satisfying to the ear. The melody is noted from the beginning of the performance as the hitting of the woodblock is melodic. It is also very evident upon the introduction of the double bass near the end of the piece.

The woodblocks, however, cease near the end of the piece and the other instruments continue with the amplified rhythm. The pattern of this piece is a fast-paced one as, and it is an essence in creating the energy of this piece.

The piece is characterized by a consonant harmony that is pleasing to the listener and easy to follow. The instruments tend to blend in with each other leading to a consonant harmony. The piece gets more interesting as it goes by to its climax which follows the ceasing of the woodblocks. The dynamics of the performance vary within the production. It begins as a soft beat of woodblocks and gets louder as more instruments are added to the performance.

The song is clear, and its structure is easily noticeable as it develops from a small pitch to a climax that is followed by a smooth ending. A string orchestra does the performance. The woodblocks stand out at the beginning, but the drums and the double bass are very outstanding at the end.
