According to the Gospel narration, Magi were three wise men belonging to the class of magician-priests. They had come to Bethlehem to visit the young Christ in order to offer him their gifts made of gold, myrrh, and frankincense. These wise men included Balthazar, Gaspor, and Melchoir. The three wise men were the kings of Chaldea, Ethiopia and Nubia respectively (Cheol-U, 2014). Therefore, the poem of Elliot features strong symbolism. These wise men are the symbols of the wandering human souls looking for the eternal spirituality.

This poem starts with a nativity sermon preached by Lancelot Andrews in the year 1622 (Cheol-U, 2014). The sermon gave a description of the hardships, which Magi encountered as a result of the deep passages, unfavorable weather like snow as well as other hostile conditions that proved quite difficult to overcome, "A cold coming we had of it, just the worst time of the year' in ‘the very dead of winter" (Cheol-U, 2014). Magus admits to being an introspection promoted because of the moments of regret. People had forfeited materialistic pleasures to seek spiritual peace.

This poem presents the story of an expedition by Magi in the whole of Palestine in search of the Christian Messiah known as Jesus Christ. Elliot brings about reality that is usually mixed up by the human mind through this poem (Atkins, 2014). Travelers in the poem encounter an incident, which shifts their reality forever. This poem is a representation of the real life encounters of Elliot during his journey to find salvation. He manages to make it quite interesting by using various features of a poem.

Elliot applies some stylistic devices in this poem, which makes it more interesting. Elliot applies a vivid understanding of the journey made by the three kings by use of imagery. The use of imagery as an important stylistic device in this poem is meant to make the reader utilize his or her imagination regarding Biblical references dating more than 2,000 years ago. The narrator in this poem begins by presenting the description of the climate challenges experienced to engage the reader vividly. The description is meant to draw in the reader and make them get associated with the kind of climate it was then. This is done through the use of diction of winter, "cold, winter, snow" (Cheol-U, 2014). Visual, as well as the tactile senses of the reader, are engaged to make them feel the challenges that the three wise men faced during their journey.

As mentioned earlier, the narrator of this poem has a negative attitude towards the subject matter. The narrator appears to be very negative about the encounter he had during the journey. He applies pejorative vocabulary while describing the season it was, "Just the worst time of the year" (Cheol-U, 2014). In general, the theme developed in this poem is the damaged psyche of humanity (Kiely, 2012). Elliot simply expresses the delicate psychological condition of humanity during the 20th Century.

In conclusion, the Journey of the Magi is a poem that employs the right themes and stylistic devices to confirm the fact that the brave and dauntless that go on journeys while full of conviction are normally glorified with divinity, but it is the sensual desires as well as temptations that need to be overcome. The narrator uses stylistic devices such as imagery to make the reader imagine the worst nature of the experience he had during the journey. It is indeed a real life story.
