In the book, Richard Levine finds the location of Ingen Corporation’s second dinosaur island which he has been searching for years. The island is a few hundred miles away from the original, both of which have been abandoned when the dinosaurs rampaged the place living nearly everyone dead. Since very few people survived, the second island remains largely unknown but Levine locates a former employee of the company who gives him information regarding it. Levine then made a group of five people namely, Ian, Sarah, Thorne and Eddie Carr. Levine grows impatient and leaves for the island with a small crew of people without his team. The team was to leave two leave in two weeks. Levine and the crew are attacked but only Levine survives. The rest of the team leaves for the island where unknown to anyone two of Levine’s students at the middle school have sneaked into the cargo section of the plane. The two students are Kelly and Abby. When the team finds out about the students, they decide to keep the theme for the expedition. At the island, the follow an old jeep trail past a Tyrannosaurus Rex nest and carefully avoid two of its owners. The leave the nest and find Levine who had been living in trees to avoid the wild beasts that would devour him. The returned with him to the trailer to nurse his injuries. Later in the evening, they return to the T-Rex nest to examine it. The nest is only occupied by T-Rex babies whom the author describes as having oversized heads and are not shy. Levine accidentally stepped on one of the baby’s foot prompting it to screech. The gag it and take it to the trailer where it continues to screech inviting their parents who almost destroy the trailer but successfully take the baby away. The group live the trailer and occupy an abandoned building where they find a computer. The computer helps them gain access to a few working cameras. They also find a map. The map directs them to a building by the ocean which they suspect is a boathouse, but before they leave a group of raptors show up. They find a trap door and use it to evade the raptors. The team finds an old but functional boat which takes them to Puerto Cortes. Levine had accomplished his mission by connecting the computer with access to cameras to his laptop where he can watch and record all footage he wanted.
The prominent theme in the novel is respect for nature and life. The authors warn that even with access to genetic engineering techniques there is a moral obligation and practical reasons not to use them in a reckless way. The other theme is that of exploration. The characters are depicted as wanting to know more and to discover what lies beyond their environment. The other themes include heroism and feminism as depicted by Sarah. The major conflict presented in the book is that between humans on the island and the raptors trying to kill them. The novel alludes that the humankind should not tamper with the natural course of things. The novels depict suffrage that can result if this allusion is not adhered to. Unlike other novels, the story has no protagonist since very character fights for his own life.
