A person who leads is different from a person who manages. The qualities of a leader are not only things that one has naturally, but also they need improvement with time. Similarly, when a person gets promoted to managing people, they don't become leaders automatically. People always follow a leader, whereas a manager has people working for him or her. Ethics are critical in the smooth running of an organization. A charismatic leader will help in the realization of the organizational goals. These are some of the considerations for a successful business.
Several differences exist between a leader and a manager. First, leaders are involved in the creation of visions while managers are involved in productions of goals. Leaders will have thoughts beyond by seeing visions and turning them into reality. Managers mainly focus on achievement and setting of goals (William 2016). Second, leaders are risk-takers, while managers are risk controllers. Leaders try new things regardless of if they will succeed or fail. Managers will focus on minimizing risks. Lastly, leaders are coachers while managers are directors. Leaders view their workers as having potentials and give them opportunities to develop. Managers will give out tasks and guide workers on how to achieve them.

An effective leader has certain qualities and skills that help in the organization of workers into achieving a common goal. I consider Mark Zuckerberg as an effective leader due to some skills that he possesses. First, decisiveness, which involves making decisions effectively with the information at hand ("Indeed career guide" n.d.). This is an important quality which helps in improving efficiency and enhancing better projects. Second, problem-solving is a skill that involves solving any matters arising in a company effectively. An effective leader will explain the problem step-by-step until the best solution is reached. Lastly, the teaching and mentoring ability, whereby the leader will help develop the careers of other people for the success of the entire team. These qualities show that a leader is effective.
The topmost quality of a person in authority is charisma. A charismatic leader will help motivate people and show the best version of employees; hence, the achievement of more in business. There are several importance of charisma in leadership. A charismatic leader is confident and consequently boosts the confidence levels of others. Also, a charismatic leader is optimistic and thus finds the failures as opportunities to learn and be in control (Emily 2015). He/she, therefore, possess high emotional intelligence; hence, friendly, approachable, and dependable. People who have high levels of charisma have less practical leadership skills compared to people with moderate charisma levels. This is because they lack efficiency in daily operations of the business.
Ethical leadership guided by respecting the moral values and beliefs to enhance the rights and dignity of people. Leaders should be ethical in their daily activities by taking a number of actions and steps. They should lead by example; the ethics of a company begin from the top to down. The workers observe the choices, behavior, and values of their leader(s) and adopt them (Kiely 2019). Communication is critical for an ethical leader. The leader communicates the behaviors that are acceptable and unacceptable in the company. Practicing democracy, is another step, in making decisions by getting feedback from the employees, which is a sign of respect to them.
Controlling is an essential managerial function that the manager is expected to carry out. Controlling is, however, a problematic administrative function since it is challenging to set quantitative standards. Comparing the predetermined criteria with the actual performance is also very difficult. Several challenges are experienced in controlling including external factors such as competition and technological changes which cannot be controlled (Kalpana n.d), and employees may resist the systems of control as they cut off their freedom. Also, controlling is very costly in terms of efforts, time, and expenditure.
In conclusion, there are distinguishing characteristics between a manager and a leader. The differences are in terms of their activities and how they control. Effective leaders should be decisive, good problem solvers and can mentor and teach their employees. Being charismatic helps enhance the confidence, optimism, and emotional intelligence of the leader. Ethical leaders should be able to lead by example, communicate well, and be democratic when making decisions. Controlling is a managerial function that is difficult and may face resistance from employees, high cost, and inability to control external factors.
