The audience for this persuasive paper are stakeholders in the health of young adults. That includes young adults themselves, health practitioners treating young adults, and guardians such as parents and college administration. The goal of the paper is to highlight an issue in young adult mental health today. Thus, having these specific groups as the audience will affect the most change. As guardians, both parents and administrators of academic institutions are the groups that spend the most time around young adults in positions of relative authority. As such, their awareness of the issue outlined in the paper will be able to affect young adults through their ability to guide and recommend young adults to possible solutions. Additionally, these groups represent the support systems of young adults. As a result, not only will they be able to guide these individuals from a position of authority, but they will also be able to encourage and emotionally or academically support young adults through their mental health journey by utilizing the findings and argument posited in this paper.

Persuasive Goal

The paper's persuasive goal will be to convince the audience that the focus and treatment of mental health among young adults on the institutional level yields more efficient and cost-effective results than the general treatment approach. Using teams of professionals to treat young adults' mental health issues has been more successful and pocket-friendly when health institutions used the collaborative powers of several health practitioners. The paper aims to raise awareness of this finding and persuade the audience to take heed of it and advocate for visiting health institutions using this approach by young adults under their charge, or advocate their local health institutions to look into adopting the policy.

Position

Research has shown that creating policies, strategies, and teams focusing specifically on young adult mental health at health facilities creates not only better health outcomes for these patients, but it also lowers the financial burden on both the hospital and the patients. Increasing awareness of these findings will improve young adults' mental health outcomes and assist in lowering the high associated health care costs. Additionally, having the administration of institutions such as colleges and high schools aware of this research would help them guide students with mental illness towards the right type of programs or assistance in their associated health institutions (Bruffaerts, 2018). The same can be said of parents and other guardians acting as support systems for young adults.

Supporting Points

As the US populations’ average age increases, it is becoming more and more common to find older adults rather than younger adults in medical wards (Kanasi, 2016). Current statistics show that only 12% of young adults report serious or long-term illnesses today. The demographics of ward occupancy and acute care have focused on geriatric care over the past few years. While justified, this focus may create neglect in trending issues for the young adult population today, which would create larger health issues as this population ages in the future.

Although relatively few young adults report long-term physical health issues or disabilities, there are various health issues attributed to this population when it comes to mental health. Mental health, paired with obesity, is the main issue affecting young adults today (Jurewicz, 2015). There is a need to significantly focus on effectively treating their mental health to improve this population's health outcomes significantly.

Jurewicz's (2015) research has demonstrated that assembling teams for young adult mental health within health institutions is the most effective and cost-efficient way to manage young adult mental health in most populations. Raising awareness of these findings among guardians and health practitioners will contribute to young adult public health.
