Response to question 1a

The two examples that describe the connection between classical and popular music genres are Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten and O Superman by Laurie Anderson . Peter Grimes is a classical music and it has a connection with popular music because its performance features other music artists like Mr. Swallow. Popular music is a genre characterized by featuring other artists by the main artists. The song is a description of the death of Peter Grime and its performance had to contain a multiple of actors to help in bringing relevancy. O superman is another classical music that connects classical and popular music genres. The features used in O superman relate to those used in popular music and they include the use of diverse lighting effects, using shadow displays, and use of sign language. These features is indicates that popular music is connected to classical music because both the music genres use the above features. The two styles are separate because their period and techniques of composition are different even though they are slightly related. The connection between classical and popular music genres is an indication that classical music will still have an influence over new music genres in future.

Response to question 2a

Postmodernism in music is a term that describes the overall trends and specific works in the music context past modernism. It describes music events after modernism period, thereby allowing an individual to relate music between the two periods. The relationship of postmodernism and the past is the way it describes the tendencies and changes in music through the period of modernism to postmodernism. Borrowing is an example that has a connection with the past music. In music, borrowing involves copying elements, gestures, and composition styles and incorporating them into one’s music. The relationship between borrowing and the past is attributed to how popular music artists borrow elements and ideas from the late classical music styles. One of the elements borrowed from classical music is the use of chorus by popular artists. Chorus is a style that was used in classical music era but borrowing allows it to be used in the popular music era. Spillane’s style of music is another example of postmodernism. Spillane is a postmodern artist whose music styles resemble those used by Zorn, who played music during the modern period. Zorn music styles like movement styles, structure of songs, and performance behaviors are rampant in Spillane’s music. The relationship in Spillane’s style of music and that of Zorn is evidence on how postmodernism relates to the past, modernism.

Response to question 3a

Steve Reich’s ‘come out’ is an example of music composed in the 20 th century. Together with other pieces, ‘come out’ made Steve Reich termed as the America’s supreme existing musician because of he became the most innovative musical thinker of that period. ‘Come out’ music has been influential to postmodern and mainstream composers globally. The characteristics of the song that makes it different from that of mainstream composers include repetition, steady pulse, and a charm with standards.

John Zorn is another example of a postmodern era artist. He is known with his first sole work ‘The Big Gundown,’ a song that made him famous during the 20 th century. The difference of Zorn from mainstream artists is the ability to produce and perform music from diverse genres like jazz, hardcore, classical, and others. This ability has kept Zorn active up to the 21 st century. Most mainstream artists stick to one genre in all their performances and composition.

Technology affected the two composers’ works in the recent decades as their works became out of fashion. The evolution of music, as a result of technology, negatively affected music of the modern era. The evolution led to popular music that many people like to listen. The improvement in music equipment changed sounds, tracks, and beats in music making people to drive their attention away from Reich and Zorn’s works.
