National security responsibilities fall across many entities in the federal government of the United States. In the country, national security is defined as policies of the national defense of the U.S plus the policies of foreign relations. There are multiple departments, agencies, and bureaus that carry out national security responsibilities. Each of these entities is influential to this role in its own way. However, the most influential national security entity is the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The FBI is very influential to the United States national security as it is the domestic intelligence and security service of the country. In addition, it is the principal agency that enforces the law. In countering terrorism, the bureau avails intelligence and carries out investigations on criminal activities (Apuzo, 2018).
By utilizing the news article ‘FBI Probe Unearths Larger Terrorism Plot’ by Homeland Preparedness News, (Clark, 2018); the vital role of the FBI in maintaining national security is evident. An FBI probe of a man in Maryland uncovered his criminal activity in engaging in conspiracy. Mohamed Elshinawy planned of conspiracy and obtaining material, resource and weapon support from the ISIS terrorism group. The FBI investigators revealed that that the suspect needed financial support from the ISIS to carry out a terrorist attack in America. During the investigations, the FBI discovered a further conspiracy involving the ISIS and a plan to develop sophisticated drones for terrorism. The intelligence officials of the FBI uncovered further criminal involvement by Elshinawy. A surveillance of his property and social media accounts revealed more engagement with ISIS. Due to the amount of evidence gained by the FBI officials in their investigations in July 2018, Elshinawy was sentenced for 20 years in a federal prison (Clark, 2018). This case proves how the FBI is influential in the promotion of national security in the United States through domestic intelligence, investigating criminal activities, enforcing the law and countering terrorism.
