Prompt One
This photograph is a vivid reminder of the tough life we led while living with my grandmother. This was 1963, and my father was away serving in Vietnam. The obstacles were great and the struggles real at this moment. In the picture, I smile holding my Pebble doll because I know that the situation would pass. Loving and caring for my doll taught me to care and love myself and other people. I trusted that God was with me and I had to be resilient enough to succeed since I was born for a purpose. I had to keep my dreams alive because giving up in this situation was not an option. My presence in the world had to be felt through the influence I would have in the people I interacted with. As Hirst, and Phelps (2016, p. 39) state, retention of such moments remind us to remain focused on our life goals.
Prompt Two
The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is a true representation of a building which is ‘a way to be’ and not only ‘a place to be.’ The building is designed with vertical lines that seem to direct the faithful’s souls towards God in heaven. Lewis and Lewis (2014, p.167) argue that architecture is distinct from other forms of art because it is lived in. A person who enters the Notre Dame Cathedral sees statutes, paintings and biblical stories’ drawings that inspire and admonish. The Christian faith in an orchestra is represented and simplified in this place of worship. Through the gothic arches of the cathedral, the viewers experience the way in which art elevates common physical phenomenon to spiritual aspects of worship. Even without the actual reading of the biblical word, the faithful from a glimpse on the walls get into a solemn mood of worship.
