This is because he will focus on the mills that the serial killer often takes and the kind of women he admires. This would probably give him a new link or even a reason to continue pursuing Oakes.

Claire's son Stanley is in New Zealand. He figures in this narrative because Thumps thinks that he is Oakes's own son, and thus the two had found a way to protect him.
