Thesis statement

Employee safety in any organization is a paramount consideration that should not be debatable at any cost. In manufacturing organizations, cases of injuries tend to be high, and it is because of the lack of protective gear and training on how the employees can minimize these risks while in the organization. Therefore, in this research paper, the main focus is to determine literature review and scholarly findings that explain the importance of Personal Protective Equipment and how they help in reducing injuries that take place in manufacturing organizations.

Literature Review

Introduction

Protective gears are instrumental as they help in improving employee safety and also achieving high morale among the employees. In manufacturing organizations, there are high risks that the employee is exposed to, which requires the presence of the protective gear to minimize these injuries. Different scholars have been interested in understanding the manufacturing environment and how to mitigate the risks. Through the literature review, the role of the personal protective equipment in a manufacturing organization will be established.

Body of literature review

Manufacturing industries are faced with different issues, such as an increase in risks of injuries, which is the main reason why the organizations are continually engaging in improvement techniques that help in mitigating the damages. Research findings suggest that the application of personal protective equipment is an appropriate mechanism that can help the manufacturing institutions to reduce the injuries that the employees are facing. According to Lombardi, Verma, Brennan & Perry in 2009, they suggested that manufacturing organizations have protective gear, but there are several incidences where the employees in the organizations are not wearing this equipment. Through the cases, the authors suggested that there is a need to engage in intervention mechanisms to promote safety in the organization. Research findings by Nikulin, A., Ikonnikov, D., & Dolzhikov in 2019 suggests that all the employees in the organization have to be subjected to refresher courses and consistent training. The importance of these pieces of training will aid in gaining the relevant skills that can be used in using personal protective equipment in manufacturing organizations.

In implementing the use of personal protective equipment, different factors might hinder the successful implementation process. According to Lombardi, Verma, Brennan & Perry in 2009, the age of the worker also creates a significant impact when it comes to the use of protective equipment. However, Kwon et al. in 2017 suggest that having support structures and mechanisms in the manufacturing organization is instrumental in reminding the employees of their safety and the reasons why they should use the personal protective equipment. Kwon et al. in 2017 further place emphasis on the commitment of the employees towards minimizing injuries and communicating to them before the implementation of the personal protective equipment to reduce any incidences of resistance in the organization.

Silva & de Alencar, 2019 conducted research, and they established why PPE helps in minimizing the injustices that are faced in a manufacturing organization. In the study, findings suggested that personal protective gear such as nose masks and helmets make the employees feel safe and improve their morale while they are handling duties in the organization. Hence, it is the reason why employees are always keen on their roles, and in the process, there is a minimization of the injuries that are taking place in the manufacturing organization. Further, the statements are supported by research conducted by Walker in 2008. In the research study, Walker states that employees in a manufacturing organization are always willing to wear personal protective gear as long as they have the right training and information about the equipment (Drews et al., 2019). It means that there should be a development of a safety culture in the organization, which will motivate the manufacturing employees to wear personal protective gear not only for the organization but also to protect their bodies while they are handling duties in the organization. Lastly, according to Doll et al. (2017), there is a need for the allocation of adequate resources in the manufacturing organization to ensure that the employees are trained on the equipment. Further, the manufacturing organization has to ensure that there is an availability of personal protective equipment in the organization for use by the employees.

Conclusion

In the above literature review, it is evident that personal protective equipment plays a vital role in reducing injuries in the manufacturing organization. Therefore, manufacturing institutions should ensure that the employees are subjected to consistent training that will help them gain the skills and knowledge on safety matters while in the organization.
