Steps to Avoid Plagiarism

Increasing the understanding of plagiarism is a step in avoiding plagiarism in healthcare. Research in healthcare is one of the forms of plagiarism. Researchers and authors in healthcare plagiarize their works due to lack of knowledge on plagiarism. The researchers need to understand the need for avoiding duplication of research. Knowledge is required among the researchers on the impact of plagiarizing research, in terms of retrieval of research, the wastage of financial and other resources in conducting duplicated research and loss of space to accommodate original research works on publication websites and libraries (Zhang, 2016).

Another step towards avoiding plagiarism in healthcare is an acknowledgment of authors when writing articles on healthcare. One of the forms of healthcare plagiarism widely involves the use of another person’s ideas in healthcare articles. However, writers in health care need other writers’ or researchers’ ideas and data. Thus, to avoid this form of plagiarism in healthcare care, sources should be acknowledged through citation and references. Inaccurate or insufficient referencing results into plagiarism. Healthcare writers should adhere to the reference style that is required. Further, the reference or bibliography lists should accompany the articles in healthcare (Zhang, 2016). All the directly quoted texts from the sources should be accompanied by quotation marks and acknowledgement of the sources and the exact pages where the text has been extracted from.

Negative Effects Plagiarism in Healthcare

Plagiarism in healthcare research damages the integrity and reliability of research results. Plagiarism involves inaccurate usage of findings from other research. In health care research and other professions, the reliance on previous data is crucial. Results from previous researches inform on the current issues and gaps in the knowledge that need to be addressed. Importantly, acknowledge obtained from other sources needs to be acknowledged. Failure to acknowledge the data sources, which is a form of plagiarism, reduces the credibility of the research material in healthcare (Crowhurst, Bergin, & Wells, 2019). In the same manner, using data inaccurately from the previous research is a form of plagiarism and is detrimental to the quality of the research.

Plagiarism negatively affects healthcare education. Students pursuing healthcare and related courses and who rely inappropriately on other people’s works, complete their education without acquiring the necessary communication skills. Such students do not possess the adequate skills and knowledge on citing sources in their written works. Their level of communication in healthcare practice is impaired (Gasparyan et al., 2017). The students miss career and promotional opportunities due to the insufficiency of communication skills in practice. The lack of proper written communication skills among healthcare professionals poses a significant threat to the quality of health care services. Communication skills among healthcare professionals affect the quality of healthcare services offered by the professionals in the clinical setting (Gasparyan et al., 2017).

In summary, plagiarism in healthcare occurs in health written works and research. Plagiarism leads to the loss of research integrity, credibility, and reliability and failure to acquire requisite communication skills. Knowledge on plagiarism and acknowledgment of other peoples’ will aid in avoiding plagiarism in healthcare.
