One has to know that “about 300 million tons of plastic is produced globally each year” (Wassener, 2011). By 2025, it has been hypothesized that “ the amount of plastic projected to be entering the oceans would constitute the equivalent of 10 bags per foot of coastline” (Schwartz, 2015, p. A4). According to a recent survey released by the United Nations Environment Program, the level of disposal of plastic waste ranges between 22% and 43% globally.

Speculating upon China, it should be viewed as having a profoundly-complex history with plastic waste. Together with its dense population, China can be characterized by manufacturing a colossal amount of plastic, which, ultimately, resulted in PRC occupying the first place in the list of largest plastic waste producing countries. China produces nearly 2.4 million tons (about 30%) of global plastic waste clogging the world’s oceans. It is not an exaggeration to say that plastic pollution occurs as a truly big challenge facing China. Since China’s waste production continues to rise throughout the country, one can assume that the authorities put insufficient efforts into putting an end to this societal problem. Sure enough, however, there is an apparent lack of environmental awareness among the public as well. To reduce plastic pollution in China, the current government needs to prove capable of setting up recycling and waste processing industry; obviously, plastic waste epidemic is “a situation that calls for stopping the problem at the source” (Boyle, 2011). It follows from this that China is at the critical moment to completely ban plastic bags that seem to have penetrated every nook and cranny of people’s daily life.
