College students are more often faced with situations in their college life which may lead to them being stressed leading to poor academic performance. The primary things that play a significant role in causing stress to college students are; the effort balance between classes, social life, extracurricular activities, work and homesick for new students. A study, however, shows that music can be therapeutic and help such students to relieve stress. In this assignment, we look at the significance of music as a form of therapy in dealing with stress among college students.

Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based intervention, used therapeutically to address individual's emotion, social, cognitive and physical needs, according to the American Music Therapy Association. The study shows that stress emanates from the brain, which structurally and chemically manipulated by acute stress. However, music is recognized as an effective measure in combating stress and is commonly used as a form of Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). An annual Alternative Nutrition class student from California University organized a study using music therapy and nutritional supplementation whereby they had to listen to several songs and fill in questionnaires on how effective they found each song. The levels of their stress were recorded before and after listening to the music. The results indicated a significant drop in the levels after the exercise, which proved the effectiveness of music as stress therapy.

I found it interesting that the music that many consider being mainly for entertainment and relaxation can also be used in the medicine field in dealing with psychological problems and dealing with stress. I mostly concur with the results of the experiment that music can help in dealing with stress. This can also be attributed to a study done by physicians Wang, Kulkami, Dolev, and Kain (2002) which indicated that music could reduce anxiety in pre-operative patients.
