Qn 1:

In his theory, Amy Cuddy concludes that body language often influences people’s perception. According to Cuddy, when one assumes a powerful posture, they are bound to influence and encourage a positive outlook of self. I totally agree with Cuddy’s thoughts. Assuming a posture of power and dominance would in effect cause those around you to respond in kind and perceive you in your assumed state regardless of the reality.

The use of body language to dictate how others perceive you is a practice often employed by many leaders as a way of improving their overall perception in the eyes of peers and the masses. As a matter fact, research has shown that non-verbal cues account for over 90 percent of communication ( Kocbek, 2006).

This knowledge is beneficial as it enables me to identify the best aspects to consider when carrying out important presentations. I now understand how to manage negative internal emotions like nervousness and fear that come as a result of having a poor posture. I now understand that a simple technique such as improving my posture can have significant impact on the presentation as a whole ( Ašanin, Ritonija & Vukasovič, 2016).

Qn2.

I agree with Cuddy’s position simply because she provides scientific evidence that confirms her assertions. Moreover, beyond just doing the Wonder Woman power pose, the change in attitude from that of a defeated, meek individual to that of a powerful individual can actually transform how other individuals perceive you. Taking the first but very difficult step to shift your perspective of self and generating confidence in yourself will induce the same attitude in others. If you believe this about yourself and act like it, you will inevitably develop habits that will drive you in becoming a successful and powerful individual ( Kocbek, 2006).

In brief, in public speaking people respond very well to charismatic, successful and powerful people. All you need to do is to harness the concepts propagated by Cuddy by imitating the body language of a charismatic, successful individual. When you are sure of yourself, you then will become a better orator. Moreover, when you exude confidence and self assurance you command the attention of audiences.
