The demand for counselling services is increasing across the globe as many people are facing a lot of social and psychological problems that adversely affect their health and wellbeing. Counsellors play a significant role in society, especially those who are struggling with various issues or problems. Thus, as a person who always wants to assist others, I am deeply passionate about the counselling profession. I have encountered some social problems in life while at the same time, I have seen other people struggling with various issues. As a result, I have worked as a residential counsellor for about seven years. I always want to help others, but I believe this would be possible when I pursue counselling. Specifically, I have a lot of interest in helping children, which explains why I am aspiring to be a guidance counsellor.
The main reason why I have chosen guidance counselling is that I appreciate and understand the importance of childhood health and wellbeing. A child who enjoys good health and wellbeing is likely to become a healthy and productive adult. Early counselling in life is one of the effective ways to address mental, emotional, and behavioral problems that can affect children in their later life. Also, I believe that children have complex problems that can only be solved through guidance counselling. I have learned through my childhood experience that children always want someone to listen to them, particularly when they are encountering challenges or difficulties in life. Although it may not be possible to fix people, I believe guidance counselling is essential for children.

My decision to pursue guidance counselling was mainly influenced by personal experience when I was a child. I faced some challenges in life that required help from a therapist when I was still a child. Even though I managed to get a therapist, I did not feel connected to him, forcing me to look for another counsellor. I did not feel joined by the new therapists, and I had to abandon therapy, even though I needed the services. Thus, based on my childhood experience with therapists, I believe that counsellors or therapists should be able to connect with their clients. However, this is only possible when they have multicultural competency. I am determined to improve my cultural competence to be an excellent counsellor to clients across cultural divides.
Also, I have many personal characteristics that I believe will improve my work as a guidance counsellor. First, I am a good listener, which is essential in any counselling service. Active listening is one of the most critical skills that a counsellor should have because it does not only boost the trust between a therapist and client, but it also makes the latter feel worthy. Secondly, I am inquisitive in nature, which will guide me in the counselling process, particularly concerning asking relevant questions. Thirdly, I have a high level of self-awareness that will assist me to remain objective throughout the counselling session. Fourthly, I have excellent problem-solving skills, which I can use to solve a client's problem or issue. Besides, I can help clients across cultures because of my multicultural competency. Nonetheless, I am a talkative person, which may adversely affect my counselling process, especially when I do not control it.
I am particularly interested in helping children overcome their challenges in life while helping them to address their health-related problems. Currently, many children are suffering from various emotional and psychological issues that require the help of a guidance counsellor. I firmly believe that emotional and psychological counselling can improve the mental health of children significantly. I have the passion for working with children and young people.
My mother convinces me that I can I am good at helping others because I am not only empathetic but also firm. My interest in helping others is now new because it started when I was a child. I earned the title “the little big sister” when I was still a child because of my ability to lead my siblings while providing some comfort to them whenever they faced challenges in life. How in interacted and related with my siblings and parents prepared me to become a good helping professional.
Therefore, empathy is the main value that I see contributing to my professional work. It enables me to assist people in their most difficult and stressful situations. Also, self-compassion is a value that I believe is helpful in my professional work because it helps me to remain objective throughout the counselling process. Besides, self-compassion keeps me away from person distractions. However, it is possible for implicit bias to affect my professional work adversely. Even though implicit bias is sometimes inevitable, I will try to avoid it by maintaining professionalism.
Finally, being very empathic is the main strength that will be helpful in my professional work as a guidance counsellor. Counselling is a profession that is mostly based on empathy. Also, my multicultural or cultural competence is another strength that will assist me in my professional work, as a counsellor provides services to clients across culture. Nonetheless, being talkative is a weakness that I have to work on to improve my professional work. Talkativeness can hinder effective counselling. I am determined to become an effective and successful guidance counsellor.
