Importance of syllabus
A syllabus is an instructive tool that sets the standards for what should be expected by learners during a complete course session. As such, it provides the concepts and topics that will be learnt and on which the final examinations will test ( Kaur, 2019) . A course syllabus has numerous integral features which makes it important. First, a syllabus as noted earlier is a course-planning too which provides instructors with the appropriate assistance to develop, prepare, and organize for any given course ( Kaur, 2019) . Additionally, a syllabus is important in that it describes the goals that ought to be achieved thus explaining the structure of the course as well as assignments, review sessions, and examinations. Moreover, a course syllabus in critical in conveying to learners a clear idea regarding the contents of the course in addition to the knowledge that the learners will gain through taking the course ( Kaur, 2019) . Finally, it can be argued that a course syllabus accords learners with the appropriate opportunity to conduct extensive practice noting that the syllabus has numerous problem sets, subject oriented assignments, and homework.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism has a wide scope and defines taking the ideas of another individual and passing them as if they are your own. Additionally, plagiarism can be viewed in the lens of using and failing to credit the source of ideas, work, or production thus bringing forward such ideas as original and new (“ What is Plagiarism?”, 2017) . Moreover presenting another person’s work as well as providing information that is incorrect regarding a source can be considered as plagiarism.
Noting that it is always easy for the learners to find information regarding topics that they are working on, it poses as a challenge to integrate that information into individual work without falling into the plagiarism trap. As such it is important to know the different ways through which one can avoid plagiarism. The first way of avoiding plagiarism is paraphrasing information rather than writing it word for word. It is important for a learner to read and understand such information and putting it in own words while avoiding to put more than two words in a row from the same text (“ What is Plagiarism?”, 2017) . Another approach of avoiding plagiarism is citing. The approach is the most effective way of keeping of plagiarism. In citing, an individual provides the author as well as the date when the document from which the information has been sourced was published. It is worth mentioning that failing to cite properly may constitute plagiarism. Additionally, quoting a source is a significant approach of avoiding plagiarism. However, it is important for scholars to avoid quoting more than forty words while to keep off plagiarism allegations. Finally, scholars should provide a reference page for the sources that have been cited at the end of individual work (“ What is Plagiarism?”, 2017) . Plagiarism can lead to a scholar being expelled from a learning institution or course as well as having individual work destroyed. In other instances, plagiarism can cause permanent expulsion from learning institutions in addition to penalties, fines, and legal action.
APA Format
There are different writing formats that are extensively used by scholars and learning institutions. The APA style of formatting is among the most popular and widely used formatting standards. In this format scholars ought to adhere to spacing standards as well as other general guidelines. A document written in APA ought to be double-spaced and typed on a paper that is standard-sized with margins measuring one inch on all sides of the paper ( Purdue Writing Lab, n.d.) . A clear and readable font, for example, “12 pt. Times New Roman”, should be used. Every top of a page should have a page header that should be flushed left. The page header is a short title of the work that a scholar is working on and it should be written in upper case.
It is worth mentioning that a paper that is written in APA format has several major parts that include a title page, reference page, an abstract as well as the main body of the paper ( Purdue Writing Lab, n.d.). The title page provides a scholar’s details, the institution for which they are schooling or where the research was conducted, and the title of the work being presented. The details should be in mixed case. An abstract in APA formatted papers contains a concise summary of the research work. As such, it has conclusions, methods of research, approaches of data analysis, and the results ( Purdue Writing Lab, n.d.) . Finally, the reference section contains the sources from which information that has been used by a scholar has been sourced keeping in mind that this section comes last.
