The article by Teixeira et al., (2015) evaluates the prevalence of chronic stress among the commercial executives and its relationship with the autonomic nervous system reactivity, cognitive performance, and cortical levels after a particular acute mental stressor. The primary question to be focused on this analysis is, “does chronic stress result into psychological health problem?” The essay indicated that it is true that chronic stress is significantly related to the psychological health issue (Teixeira et al., 2015).

It is true that incidence of chronic stress among business managers is prevalent hence demands a strategic coping strategy to handle the tension, hostility, depression, and anxiety. Such a condition can cause severe mental and physical health problem which will consequently affect the effectiveness of employees and overall organizational performance (Teixeira et al., 2015). The adaptive stress response entails vagal withdrawal that might result in increased heart rates indicating readiness to counter a given stressor. In a situation where the response is not sufficient the activation of both hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and autonomic nervous system occurs. Such a response will modify memory, circulation, and learning hence enabling a person to react to the environmental demand.

Samples of blood were taken from each participant to determine the concentration of cortical, and then the volunteers had to complete Lipp Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults Test to examine stress and Stroop Color-Word to review the rates of cognitive performance. The results showed that about 90.1 percent of the participants who indicated signs of stress showed stages of stress regarded as chronic stress. The participants with chronic stress had advanced levels of cortical (Teixeira et al., 2015).

Chronic stress further has been shown to impair performance revealing increased levels of longer reaction time and error in the incongruent stimulus task. The study indicated that chronic psychological stress related with advanced cortisol levels harm overall cognitive performance particularly among the business executives autonomous of their gender (Teixeira et al., 2015). Further, a rounded autonomic nervous system’s reactivity was also experienced when the males diagnosed with chronic stress were presented to a severe psychological stressor. It is true that based on the study outcome, over time, the eminent concentration of cortisol might impair normal catecholamines’ action in reaction to stress, further, such an event might result in a severe impairment in the cognitive performance.
