Limitations

One of the major limitations evident in the literature is the fact that the discourse is significantly centered on the minority groups such as the black Americans, the Latinos, and the Asians. As such, only the perspectives from these groups are expressed rather than the viewpoints of other ethnic groups such as the white community. In other words, other ethnic communities such as the whites who are a fundamental part of the discourse are poorly represented as compared to the minority groups. In addition, the literature does not satisfactorily discuss the solutions to racial profiling and police brutality in depth neither does it provide the risk factors, motives or reasons that explain why racial profiling and police brutality happen.

In essence, based on the fact that the topic is general and non-specific, the literature does not incorporate criminological or psychological theories that explain why racial profiling and police brutality are perpetrated towards the minority groups. Additionally, the literature does not highlight the comparative statistics or data regarding police brutality perpetrated against all ethnic groups to aid in the discussion of the topic. In addition, the objectives of the study are limited in scope and are too few, and the methodological framework regarding how the research on the topic is to be conducted is not outlined.

There is no mention of the type of research that will be conducted, whether it will be qualitative or quantitative. Ultimately, the literature does not include the history of the issues and their progression through time, which could have been fundamental in specifying the purpose and objectives of the research based on the existing gaps.

Foreseeable Obstacles

Based on the lack of data and statistics, a potential and foreseeable obstacle in the research is the lack of analysis. To this end, it will be difficult to draw strong conclusions based on empirical analysis. An additional impediment in the conduction of the research is the heated politics and debate regarding racism in the public domain. As such, it will be difficult to express honest assertions regarding racial profiling and police brutality without speculations of affiliation to a certain ethnic group or political party. As a result, the credibility of the research will be in question. The research topic is also too general meaning a lot of factors need to be considered and incorporated. This will make making the discourse lengthy. Based on the political and racial implications the paper might have, funding of the project might become problematic.

The lack of data and statistics not only thwart the ability for analysis but also the ability to incorporate figures such as graphs. Moreover, part of the audience of the research especially those from the minority community such as the black Americans might feel aggrieved for being referred to as ‘black.’ As a result, they might perceive this as demeaning, which may lead to significant ethical obstacles. Additionally, obtaining information from organizations such as the ACLU or the Department of Justice might be a challenge without a proper referral from the College. As common to any research paper, a methodology is fundamental. Nevertheless, choosing the right methodology without proper data and statistics could be a challenge in conducting the research.

In instances where a research methodology is chosen, a subsequent challenge becomes the determination of the sample population or participants for the study. In the same accord, choosing a research team that is dedicated to the conduct and successful completion of the research could be a challenge. Ultimately, based on the efforts and time required to conduct the research, fatigue and a lack of motivation could be an obstacle to the conduct of the study.
