In the last three decades, Florida has become one of the most diverse areas in the United States. However, the public schools have grown to become increasingly segregated. The problem is more rampant in areas such as Miami ( LeRoy Collins Institute, 2020 ). A recent study that was done by the LeyRoy Collins Institute showed that about 20% of the schools in Florida hare intensely segregated ( LeRoy Collins Institute, 2020 ). The researchers also stated that Hispanics and African Americans make up about 90% of the total school population in most parts of the state ( LeRoy Collins Institute, 2020 ). This figure contrasts to those reported in the 1990s where the Africa Americans and Hispanics only accounted for about 10% of the student population. The study further revealed that the number of schools where the non-whites make up between 99 to 100% of the total population has increased twofold in the last two decades ( LeRoy Collins Institute, 2020 ). It is against this background that concerns have been raised regarding the degree of segregation in the public schools. Research evidence show that the high degree of segregation in the education sector can affect the performance of students and access to opportunities in the society. In cases where the schools are dominated by once race, then minority race may feel disadvantaged. In addition, some of them may feel discriminated against. In the end, the minority students may struggle to achieve the same level of academic performance like the members of the majority group ( Martinez, 2020 ). Despite the increasing rhetoric of equality in America, the school experience of some ethnic communities and minority students in Florida has been unequal. Few non-Africa Americans and non-Hispanics have been able to get enough educational opportunities in Florida. The trend adversely affects the performance of the students and make it difficult for them to achieve their full potential.
