Part 2

Hurricane Katrina is one of the most disastrous natural catastrophes to hit the United States. When the cyclone reached New Orleans, it made breaches on the hurricane surge protection flooding approximately eighty percent of the city for weeks. The storm and the resultant flood caused billions worth of property damage and even led to the loss of lives. An entire city was in dire need of help. Food, shelter and other necessities were in high demand. The unforeseeable nature of the disaster meant that the federal government had not taken enough measures to combat its effects soon enough. Non-profit organizations like the Oprah Angel Network rushed to the rescue of the people in New Orleans. Oprah Winfrey used her show to mobilize people to donate for a course to help the people of New Orleans, most of whom had their houses reduced to piles by the storm.

A record 5 million dollars was donated by the viewers of Oprah’s show by the end of two months since the Katrina hit New Orleans. Oprah Angel Network would in conjunction with the Habitat for Humanity organization build fully furnished homes for roughly sixty-five families that had been relocated to neighboring Houston, Texas. The Oprah Angel Network would further add this number and ended up financing the construction of homes for a record two-hundred and fifty families. Nine months since Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans, the donations from the viewers of the Oprah Winfrey Show had surpassed the ten million dollars mark. The affluence of Oprah Winfrey pulled in a host of celebrities who donated to the course and helped the Oprah Angel Network achieve its success in housing the victims of the disastrous hurricane (Harpo Productions, Inc., 2006).

Part 3

The Gates Foundation has funded works of goodwill all across the globe. The potential of this foundation rushing to assist in a high-risk population anywhere in the world, especially one victimized by disease outbreaks remains very high. Assuming a disease outbreak like a cholera was to strike Africa, especially in the populated regions of West Africa. The Gates Foundation and the constituent charity organizations would probably mobilize well-wishers from all across the globe to contribute towards the course of reconstructing homes for the affected families. The experience of the foundation and its widely acknowledged legitimacy would be of vital importance in the mobilization of the global population to further this course. The Gates Foundation would cater for the treatment of patients as well as finance the prevention efforts for the spread of such diseases.

The high populous growth rate of some African countries and the deplorable state of social amenities raises the potential of such outbreaks devastating vast proportions of the population. The Gates Foundation synonymously promotes projects that further in the prevention of disease outbreaks, research on health matters and poverty alleviation projects. The dominance of Bill Gates in the lucrative tech world and his continued acts of philanthropy is great news for the charity work as it is an assurance of continued support. The projects of the foundation in places like Ethiopia have gone a great way in fighting poverty and ensuring that millions of its citizens are healthy. The global nature of the foundation has helped nations learn from one another in projects that the foundation out rightly funds. Progressive trends in one African country are used as samples for the rest to emulate in the projects financed by the fund.
