The CELDT tool is useful in identifying level of proficiency in English among students, determining their level of English and assessing progress of these students in acquiring various skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. Notably, it is administered to students whose first language is not English, and ones in the process of learning English normally between grades K-12. Teachers mandated by the local education agencies have the responsibility of conducting such tests and developing recommendations for these learners. Among the concepts tested by the examination, teachers/administrators must decide on the following aspects:

Listening

Teachers are given the mandate to provide oral directions to learners, where their attention to detail and comprehension in listening is examined. Through this examination, the leader can determine whether or not the student can follow directives through listening and rates their abilities on a scale of 1 through to 5, the latter being the highest score. Furthermore, the teacher engages in lengthy talks that are aimed at examining the listening comprehension of the students over an extended period to determine how long their concentration span is. By the results obtained in the test, the educator can verify whether the student will concentrate properly in a lengthy class or might need various breaks.

The test is expected to verify proficiency level in English vocabulary and determine whether the student must be exposed to a wider array of new words to enrich their vocabulary.

Writing

Writing is a fundamental practice in the process of English learning; students are subjected to tests that verify their level of writing. Learners between kindergarten and grade 1 level are given tests to deal with coping letters and words, capitalization, and writing various words. The results from the tests provide teachers information on how learners comprehend English language and whether they can apply concepts learned in writing. Furthermore, teachers gain knowledge on necessary concepts to cover in class and engage in more practice for student’s benefit.
