The social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have become the hallmark of connection and communication. Even so, despite the positive benefits associated with it, experts have warned that, young people risk getting addicted to social networking. Excessive use of social media is likely to affect the mental health of the user, and their wellbeing (Anderson, 2018). Studies conducted on the same indicate that, users are affected in their academic achievements, and in real life relationships. Although too much use of social media can lead to addiction among users, it has numerous advantages, alongside negative impact. 

Social media advantages among children are many. For most youths, the social media provides an avenue for them to socialize and express themselves in a creative way. It provides them with a platform to share learning materials and share ideas. The social media is a communicating tool, and it offers them an opportunity to connect with other individuals that have similar interests (Anderson, 2018). For the young people, the social media helps in maintaining friendship especially when one can stay for long without meeting each other. Finally, with social media, it is possible to bring out positive changes in the society through taking part in political debates and events.

In its context, the social media has dire negative impacts on children. Firstly, spending excessive time on the social media is a waste of time. It can lead to addiction and the effects are visibly seen through deteriorating physical health (Anderson, 2018). Whenever young people take to social media, they stand a risk of affecting their ability of developing strong interpersonal relationships. Finally, prolonged use of social media among children ends up exposing them to harmful graphic images that is likely to affect their mental growth. 

In overall, social media use has both positive and negative impacts as seen in the foregoing discussion. Users get a platform to socialize and express themselves, although they equally stand a risk of getting addicted.
