Social media is considered as one of the modern approaches allowing people to communicate, as it gives every individual the autonomy to deliver without having to focus on face-to-face interactions. However, one of the critical questions that have been raised concerning the uptake of social media revolves around whether society has considered how social media is changing the way people communicate. According to Subramanian (2017), more than a third of the world today is using social media to communicate and interact, which has had a significant impact on the society concerning the way people communicate.

From an interaction point of view, Chukwuere & Chukwuere (2017) indicate that interactions have shifted from physical to technological, which can be seen from the fact that persons using social media can 'connect' with different people around the world. When using social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, one can 'connect' with thousands of 'friends' and 'followers.’ From this perspective, what is clear is that the use of social media has helped in giving communication a sense of urgency. According to Chukwuere & Chukwuere (2017), the continued use of social media has helped create an avenue through which people can connect at the click instantly at the click of a button.

Subramanian (2017) reflects on the period before social media arguing that the only way people were able to communicate and interact was through face-to-face interactions. However, this has changed significantly considering that the use of social media has created a front through which persons can express their opinion, thoughts, and idea on a platform reaching a significant audience within a matter of seconds. That seeks to reflect on the fact that indeed, social media has sought to change the way people can view their abilities to interact and engage with others in society.

Phoon (2017) indicates that the use of social media has also created a high possibility of conflict considering that people's interaction is not, in any way, controlled concerning what they are to say or how they ought to express themselves. When focusing on face-to-face interactions, people find it much harder to express themselves in a manner that is likely to offend the other party. Phoon (2017) indicates that this is not the case when dealing with social media considering that people find themselves experiencing a different way allowing them to interact or engage without having to focus on physical contact.

Chukwuere & Chukwuere (2017) indicate that although social media can be considered to have had several key advantages, it is essential to take note of the fact that it has also had a significant disadvantage concerning the development of social skills. People using social media find it much easier to check their smartphones now and then when opposed to engaging in meaningful physical conversations. Subramanian (2017) indicates that this has been driven by the fact that social media has created some for dependency, which limits the ability for a person to develop what can be described as 'people skills.' Phoon (2017) indicates that the truth about social media is that it is creating a perception that it seeks to bring people together when in reality it is separating people considering that they find it much header in trying to build meaningful social interconnections.
