I was coerced to conform to many social norms upon joining the college, although most of them emanated from the classroom context. For example, the teachers prohibited the use of mobile phones while in class since they consider texting and calling inappropriate activities when lessons are on-going. Similarly, one is not allowed to listen to music, especially by using headphones since it disrupts the attention of the others. Also, sitting on chairs assigned to specific individuals is considered disrespect in college; hence, it is a social norm that I forced myself to adapt to. This majorly applied to lecturers’ chairs that are usually positioned in front of the classroom. College students also have to comply with the norm of mutual respect and they are not expected to be rude to both their teachers and fellow classmates.
Additionally, the social norms in college involved seeking permission from the teacher in case you want to go to the washroom. This meant respect for those in authority and you could not just get up and leave as it happened in high school. Also, I was forced to comply with the norms that condemned reading other pieces of literature during class since it diverts the attention of students from what the teacher communicates.

Most importantly, I had to behave professionally and contribute my skills whenever they were needed, more so during group discussions. Therefore, I had to be positive most of the time and tried as much as possible to avoid gossips. Still, neat dress codes were authentic and time management was an obvious norm since when you reported to class late, you had to notify the don and give a proper and relevant reason as to why that happened.
Finally, all the other social norms were unique and totally different from the ones I grew up with except respect for my seniors. For instance, during my salad days, I dearly respected my parents and I was conversant with how to seek permission when I wanted to do any unusual activity. However, I forced myself into professionalism, presentable dressing codes, and not using my cellphone in the classroom setting.
