Sport psychology is very important especially in the current world where various sports have become very competitive. The first problem that often arises in sports is dealing with anxiety. Athletes are often under pressure to win tournaments, especially if they are very important. In almost all sporting activities, there are athletes who are always expected to win because of their previous stellar performances. These expectations often weigh so heavily on the shoulders of these athletes and if not managed properly, can definitely affect their performance. Therefore, one important area where sports psychologists need to study and research concerns how to manage the anxiety of athletes to enhance their optimal performance. Ideally, a sports psychologist will need to learn and apply various physical and mental therapy strategies in order to calm and boost confidence of an athlete.

The second problem concerns dealing with defeat in sports. Obviously, in every sporting activity there must be a winner and a loser. However, losing can drive some athletes into depression or very low moods, and it can take a very long time for the athletes involved to recover. In this case, it could even be better for the coach to learn about sporting psychology, especially what might happen if the athlete does not achieve their expectations. On the other hand, professional sport psychologists can work closely with the coach to enhance the recovery process of the athletes. Even before the competition starts, a sport psychologist will need to have strategies in place to address the psychological needs of the athlete regardless of a win or a loss. Therefore, it is evident that sport psychologists are important in the present competitive world of sports, and they will need to acquire the necessary knowledge to address the mental or psychological needs of athletes.
