Stephen Hawking had Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a motor neuron disease that caused hi disability before his death. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a disease that affects neurons controlling voluntary muscles, hence characterized by muscle size decrease, twitching, and stiffness. The disease kills neurons and therefore makes it hard for an individual to move his or her arms or legs as well as speak and swallow food with difficulties.

Stephen Hawking's disability dates back when he was in his final year at Oxford after realizing he had an increased clumsiness making it hard for him to go upstairs and difficulties when rowing.
