Stephen Hawking is a renowned and most famous person in the modern world. His position as a director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology and a Lucasian Professor at the University of Cambridge made him famous. He is known for his Hawking radiation involving Penrose-hawking theorems, Hawking energy, Bekenstein-Hawking formula, Thorne-Hawking-Preskill bet, Gibbons-Hawking ansatz, Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term, Gibbons-Hawking effect, and Gibbons-Hawking space.

Please give the name of the disability, disorder, or illness and then define it.

Stephen Hawking had Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a motor neuron disease that caused hi disability before his death. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a disease that affects neurons controlling voluntary muscles, hence characterized by muscle size decrease, twitching, and stiffness. The disease kills neurons and therefore makes it hard for an individual to move his or her arms or legs as well as speak and swallow food with difficulties.

When and how did they discover that they had it , or were they born with it? If they were born with it, who else in the family has it , or do their children have it?

Stephen Hawking's disability dates back when he was in his final year at Oxford after realizing he had an increased clumsiness making it hard for him to go upstairs and difficulties when rowing. When he came back home for Christmas, his family realized that he had a complication with his speech and therefore admitted to medical attention, and through MND diagnosis, the doctors gave him a two years life expectancy.

How does it affect their everyday lives?

The disability affected Stephen Hawking's way of life as he will always use crutches with occasionally failing to attend to his lectures daily. He would use a wheelchair for movement, an aspect that was a challenge for him to work normal, especially in a demanding environment as a professor.

Does it have a cure? If not, what are some of the medications they are taking to control it or keep down the signs and symptoms?

There is no known cure for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, but through doctor’s treatments and therapies, its symptoms can be eased and slowed down. Physical therapy and Glutamate blocker and muscle relaxant medications can be adopted to reduce discomfort and slow down Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease.

If they are not on medication, what are some of the things they do to cope with.

Such disability requires physical therapy to manage pain and address mobility issues, occupational therapy to maintain personal independence, breathing therapy to improve the prevailing weaknesses in respiratory muscles, and speech therapy for issues related to difficulty in talking.
