My father is a Mexican while my mother is an Arab, the two met in the US and got married in the year 1990. I am the only child in the family, born in the year 1999, and currently, I am a senior in High School. We now live in the US, in Chicago where my father works as a doctor and my mother as a nurse. My family structure is quite simple and has continued to function well for a very long time and comprises of my mother, father, and I. The marital relationship that exists between my parents is close and intimate. Their parental subsystem can be said to have no problem because my mother is good at offering to nurture for me. My life is simple since I do not have to conform to any sibling subsystem. Both of my parents are responsible for having made the rules that governed the manners in which we interacted and associated with one another, inside and outside the house. It was a requirement that we all follow the established rules, for the governance of our family, but there were instances where I would fail to follow them as required. My father was in charge of the family, and my mother would often align with him. The family transition and subsystem are governed by boundaries that I believe are clear but very rigid. Since these boundaries are strict, they have never been changed or reviewed since they were established.

The concept that I often find challenging, dealing with governance within our family, is related to the conflict over the family’s traditional values. I often wish to deviate from these values, which are otherwise binding. I am 18 years old and will be joining college on academic scholarship. For instance, I am interested in attending college to pursue my engineering dream, but my family wishes that I fulfill a role in the family business. Evidently, my parents are not supportive of my aspiration to pursue my first degree, and this has made me resentful and angry since I feel that I am being forced into a life that I do not want.

One of the clinical concepts or techniques that should be adopted is to develop a clear boundary between the subsystem and its practitioners, as this will facilitate an individual’s growth while at the same time, preventing any form of intrusion that interferes with their civil liberties. The next concept to be used will be the promotion of a generational hierarchy, which is vital since it also offers a flexible rule and roles that might be adaptable to both external and internal changes.
