Communication can be either nonverbal or verbal, and they differ due to fluctuating reasons between men and women. In a public setting, gendered nonverbal communication differs and takes different forms. For instance, according to LaFrance and Vial (2016), women tend to use more facial expressions such as direct eye contact, smiling, and nodding heads when communicating than men. This is because women tend to use communication to create an emotional connection as well as gauging the sincerity of the other party. Additionally, women use facial expression to convey the intensity of their feelings and their meaning. Besides, a smile from a lady may be an expression of appeasement while males may smile to express warmth and display their interest in women. Furthermore, women and men may nod their heads in a public setting for varying reasons. For instance, a man may node to express their agreement with the information the sender is conveying while a woman may nod to show concentration and attentiveness of what is being said.

Yes, both men and women tend to follow the traditional expectations for non-verbal communication. For instance, as Carnes (2017) asserts, that men are more likely to associate touching in a public setting with sexual intentions than women, thus, heterosexual men may be less likely to apply touch when communicating with other men. Carnes (2017) states that women are not discreet regarding touching other women because they as well use touching as an expression of sympathy or friendship.

Describe additional patterns of nonverbal behavior between men and women
Additional patterns of nonverbal behavior between women and men include gestures, personal space, and proximity. According to McQuiston and Morris (2009), regarding proximity, women tend to prefer side-by-side communication and comfortable with close proximity to their partners while men equally like face-to-face communication. Additionally, women rely more on gestures than men when communicating. In this context, women’s gestures are more fluid while for men are sharp and directed movements. Similarly, men are likely to use more personal space and command than women.

Nonverbal behaviors refer to communication without using words, also known as body language (cherry, 2018). They are used in expressing emotions, conveying attitudes, supporting verbal communication, and representing personality traits. These nonverbal behaviors include facial expression, tonal variations, gestures, postures, and eye gaze among others.
