Global warming, a concept attributed to the increase in mean temperatures of the Earth, has arguably been one of the most researched and discussed topics since the turn of the 21st century. The causes and effects of global warming have been debated as well, with some people doubting whether truly the phenomenon exists or not (Dincer, Colpan, & Kadioglu, 2013). For some, the primary cause of global warming is something else other than human activities. Whereas a few think global warming is a myth, others believe it is indeed happening right now as evidenced by the diminishing natural resources and animal populations due to climate change. This paper primarily analyses some of the causes and impacts of global warming.

To begin with, it is essential to note that the causes of global warming are varied, and man instigates a majority. The first cause is attributed to the extensive use of fossil fuels, including petroleum, oil, and gas. Burning these fossil fuels, primarily used in powering industrial engines and automobiles, mainly releases greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, which deplete the ozone layer. Other factors include deforestation, which assists in reducing levels of carbon dioxide, intensive farming, mining, and overconsumption of resources. Incineration of waste is also thought to emit toxic greenhouse gases (Dincer, Colpan, & Kadioglu, 2013).

The extreme accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere causes the greenhouse effect, a crucial process that results in warming of the Earth’s atmosphere by radiation released from the sun above the normal levels. This is indeed what causes global warming. Global warming has affected humans, the general biodiversity, weather, as well as natural resources like oceans. For humans, global warming has resulted in droughts and fires, resulting in scarcity of food and famine (Dincer, Colpan, & Kadioglu, 2013). On the physical environment, it has resulted in a rise in sea temperatures, which has subsequently displaced populations living around low-lying coastal regions. The weather has also changed immensely, with communities now receiving more heat waves, low or high precipitation, and natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, storms, as well as wildfires.
