My city of choice is Phenix City. I selected this city because it has great climate and the people occupying it are great too. According to the census data released in the year 2010, the city of Phenix has an approximate of 32800 people (United States Census Bureau, 2010). It has an estimated total area of 24.7 square miles, with 0.2 square miles covered by water. The city of Phenix can be described as a suburban community. This is because it is ranked as one of the best cities that can sustain a low-class family. According to the data provided by government agencies, the medium household income for the residents of Phenix City is $39,650. There are 85% of Phenix City residents that possess a high school diploma. This is an implication that only 15% of people aged 25 and above do not have a high school diploma. There are also 21% of Phenix residents with a bachelor’s degree. Most of the bachelor’s degree holders are 25 years and above.

According to the government data, 20% of the Phenix City residents live below the poverty line. The average number of people living below the poverty line is high than the minimum average of 13% provided by the government. The city of Phenix has a jobless rate of 3.8% (Census Bureau, 2019). As to the year 2017, the average age of Phenix City residents was 32 years. Christians dominate the city of Phenix with Protestants and Roman Catholics leading. The whites dominate Phenix City by 46%, followed by African Americans, with 44% as the rest races share the remaining percentage. Women make up 52%, while men make up 48% of the total Phenix City population. Most of the residents are English speakers, and can also write and read, implying a high number of literate people. People are part of the Phenix City community because they are influenced by its ability to support low and middle-class people.

Tobacco smoking in the city of Phenix is restricted, especially in workplaces and other enclosed areas. The city administration prohibits the smoking of tobacco in public, and residents are supposed to follow the rules provided by the administration. Tobacco smoking is only allowed in private residents. The most evident health risk behavior among Phenix City residents is the engagement in alcohol-related activities. This has impacted on the psychological health of the users. The most disadvantaged population in this community is the elderly and children. The aging population is unproductive, increasing the rates of dependency. Common mental health and eating disorders are some of the most health issues affecting residents of the city of Phenix.

The city of Phenix has various attraction centers that facilitate recreational activities. Some of the attraction centers include but not limited to museums, riverside walks, beautiful parks, and exquisite architectures. The recent laws that introduce harsh punishments for people found littering shows that there are people of littering in the city of Phenix. Tobacco smoking is evident among the people in the city of Phenix, leading to the establishment of smoking policies. 50% of Phenix City residents consume general health foods. Several gyms around the city of Phenix prove their exercising nature. There is condom use in the city of Phenix, which supplements health education and contraceptives provided by the state to reduce early and unplanned pregnancies (Alabama Public Health, 2019). Phenix City residents are engaged in various non-profit groups and organizations across the city. Several mental illness cases have led to some individuals keeping themselves. There is a sense of unity, as expressed by Phenix City Mayor Eddie Lowe, who recently called the residents for unity prayer. The people of Phenix practice religion, as evidenced by a large number of Christians in the area. I realized that the people of Phenix City are hard-working as they go about with their daily activities.

Section 3 

Social policies are significant in shaping the health and other fundamental aspects of the people of the city of Phenix. There are over 100 non-profit organizations in the city of Phenix dedicated to elevating the state of the community. Food retailing business is conventional in the Phenix community, with business stores leading the food industry. Various parks around Phenix City influence different kinds of recreational activities. There are designated sidewalks for the people in the city. Clear driveways and bike lanes exist for motorists. There are good places for pedestrians too in the city. Canoe trips in Chattahoochee add up as non-motorized commute. Fitness centers are available comprising of gyms and other training facilities. Healthy eating options are available and are affordable throughout the city.

There are several recycling containers and garbage collection spread across the city in attempts to keep the city clean. Marketing in Phenix City is concentrated on advertising through billboards. Advertisers also observe health signage in their advertisements. Hospitals in Phenix City are easily accessible based on 24 hours, depending on their operation schedule (City Data, 2019). Most of the health facilities accept insurance with other clinics accepting underinsured options. The mission statement of Phenix City is to offer exceptional customer service, uphold the public trust, and develop the community vision. There is no designated worship place for all religions.

What is your opinion on the Phenix City community?

The city of Phenix is a community that is inhabited by accommodative people. They work hard to drive the community towards its visions.

How do you think about the progress of the community?

The community is doing everything to ensure that Phenix City is progressive. Thus, I can conclude that the community is doing well.

What do you think the community should improve?

I think the community should work towards inclusivity to ensure that no one is discriminated based on their race or any other aspect.

What health concern do you see?

My health concern is about the rising cases of mental illness. There is a need to investigate the causes of the recent rise.

Do you feel safe here?

I feel safe in Phenix City as the state has initiated effective efforts to beef up the security of the community.

What community initiatives have you witnessed in health around the city?

The public health department has imitated programs that aim at improving the levels of health among the residents.
