Christian music can be defined as a religious genre of art written and sang to express either communal or personal belief regarding Christian faith or life. The concept of Christian music has been in existence since the inception of Christianity ( Kotarba, 2013) In churches and religious ceremonies, Christian music is played to pass a positive message in an entertaining way. Today, there are various themes of this music ranging from penitence, praise, worship, or even lament. Since the mid-20 th century, Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) has evolved from the original pop-rock to other genres which fall into various categories such as Christian hip-hop, rock, country music, hardcore, and alternative rock. However, they are all put into a larger category called Christian pop or gospel ( Kotarba, 2013) .

Due to the massive revolution and accessibility of Christian music, people have come up with the various individual interpretations that are occasionally controversial. For instance, certain Christian denominations view rock ‘n' roll music meant to teach children and parents about religious values, as some kind of evil thing under the disguise of Christian rock. Such beliefs are built on the fact that rock music, especially metal rock, is based on satanic affairs. Some gospel and secular musicians argue that since religion is a sociological institution based on sacred beliefs and practices, there is no reason to prohibit music with moral socialization if it articulates a general moral value(s) ( Kotarba, 2013) . On the other hand, religious artists should ensure that the good values and message they spread through the song is a perfect reflection of their life so that their followers can emulate them.

Before a religious denomination embarks on discrediting any form of music, it should find out the role that music can play in the everyday life of its followers. The world usually associates popular songs with some dark forces and therefore, some gospel songs attract criticism when they start gaining popularity ( Kotarba, 2013) . Some people claim that there are popular Christian songs that threaten or criticize religion. However, they fail to understand the fact that what is important is the message in those songs. The younger generation has a stronger affiliation with entertainment especially music, therefore, a religious message intended for this population can be spread through music more effectively than any other means ( Kotarba, 2013) . Christian music has a spiritual message based on moral values, Biblical readings, and contemporary life. Therefore, religious denominations other than Christianity should embrace sacrilegious songs.
