Anxiety is a temporary feeling of fear or worry that one may face at home, work, before making a major decision, or taking a test. However, an individual with an anxiety disorder will have the anxiety for some time, and it may get worse. The symptoms of anxiety disorder may distract an individual from conducting daily activities such as relationships, job performance, and school work. Various types of anxiety disorder include panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and different phobia-related disorders. This paper will focus on the two common anxiety disorders that is panic and generalized anxiety disorders’ symptoms, causes and treatment of people with anxiety disorder.

Causes and Symptoms

Individuals that suffer from panic disorder experience recurrent and unexpected panic attacks out of intense fear that reaches its peak within minutes (Baer, 2015). The attack is caused by fear of a situation or an object. During the attack, one may feel sweaty, shake, be out of control, suspect impending doom; and have shortness of breath and pounding heartbeat or heart palpitations. Usually, people who experience panic attacks try to avoid situations, places or behaviors that may trigger the disorder.

People who experience generalized anxiety disorder show excess worry or anxiety for up to months in their social lives, health, and at work (Baer, 2015). As a result, the effects can hinder performance in their daily life activities including jobs. The disorder is triggered by fear or worry of a situation or object. The symptoms include fatigue, irritable feeling, muscle tension, uncontrollable worry, sleep problems, and restlessness. Biblically, anxiety disorders are considered as daily life challenges (Padilla, 2017). Thus, it further aids in the understanding of the disorder.

Treatment

The professional treatment for anxiety disorder is psychotherapy, medication or a combination of both psychotherapy and medication treatments (Baer, 2015). The psychotherapy treatment that is preferred by most for this disorder is cognitive behavioral therapy. The treatment is found to be most effective since the patient not only learns but also practices social skills for treating the social disorder. Medication such as anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines cannot cure the ailment but relieve one from the symptoms. Hence, the medication can be combined with psychotherapy.

Conclusion

Anxiety disorder is a temporary feeling caused by fear of a place, situation or an object that may hinder an individuals’ performance in social life, health, work, and daily life activities. The two disorder share the same causes. However, a panic disorder occurs unexpectedly and lasts for minutes while generalized anxiety disorder lasts for up to six months. Psychotherapy, medication treatments or a combination of both can be used to treat patients of anxiety disorder.
