Sleep is very a very essential part of human life and it must be done in order for one to function normal during the day (Jabr, 2013). Sleeping is an idea which is accompanied by many myths and tales. People say that one needs at least eight hours of sleep to be healthy. Others believe alcohol makes people sleep and remain sound afterwards. However, during the sleep the brain is always very active and there is extra energy used during those dark hours. There are activities that still go on when we are asleep, and those activities are very important since they make one to be aware, alert and awake during the consciousness time. Therefore, it is not well for people to sleep short hours or deprive themselves of sleep. This paper analysis the why it is a problem for the college students to rest-deprived and sleep deprived.

Sleep deprivation is one of the major problems affecting colleague students all over the world. The students do not get enough sleep at night so that they remain alarm during the day to achieve academic goals in school. Sleep is very important among the youths and adolescents as well as children for healthy growth and development ( Immordino-Yang, 2016) . The students who lack enough sleep struggle with themselves during the day. The problem of sleep depression among the college student is persistent as they have the first time to be independent as there are no parents to tell them the sleep schedules, so they can choose to sleep or not to sleep. Sleep deprivation results from the pressures of success in life. People look at the success part of life by depriving themselves sleep yet it leads to illnesses and reduces academic performance among the college students ( Krantz, 2018) .

Sleep deprivation is dangerous to the health of the students. For instance, according to Krantz, (2018), sleep deprivation affects the students cognitive functioning during the day hence it reduces the academic performance and achievement. It also impairs the behavioral performance during the day. When the learners do not sleep well at night during the day they become tired and even the brain stops thinking because they are not fully awake, so they lack the ability to process information. Lack of enough sleep weakens the immune system hence one becomes more prone to illnesses ( Krantz, 2018).

In the article “ Why your brain needs more downtime ,” Jabr, (2013) states that it is necessary of the students to be awake so that they can make sense of what they learn. Downtime is a chance that the brain has to make sense of the what is taught to surface fundamental unresolved tension in people’s live. Downtime also helps in reflection of what has been learned during the day or in the early hours. Most of the adults have tuned themselves to a schedule of sleeping at night and staying awake during the day. However, Krantz (2018), asserts that sleeping at night and staying awake during the day is not a good idea to the brain. People need to have at least a 2 to 4 sleep during the day to let the brain rest.

Jabr (2013), noted that snaps help in sharpening the concentration and improves the performance of the sleep-deprived and fully rested on all duties from being sick. According to Jabr (2013), during downtime the brain needs to rest from the daily activities. In this case one can go for vocation, practice meditation and spend time with other people in the gardens and outdoor peaceful place. This benefits the brain by sharpening the mind. When one is relaxing sleeping the brain does not stop working or slow down. Downtime helps the brain to store attention and motivation which encourages productivity and creativity, and this helps one to achieve the highest performance level (Immordino-Yang, 2016)

Immordino-Yang, (2016) states that the teachers and medical practitioners have discussed the benefits of downtime and reflection for an individual have the ability to make sense in his decisions about his or her future behavior. According to many studies in education emphasize on the benefits of introspection as well as interventions as the therapy which teaches skills for being mindful and reflective to have a good social and emotional functioning and academic success among students. In the emotions, learning and the brain Immordino-Yang, (2016), explains how the brain help individuals understand the instructions in school and in this case emotion plays a key role in helping learners to apply what they have learned to the real world.

Individuals who had once expressed the ability to be socially astute were now unable to apply what they had learned in educational settings to the real world. “The traditional way to explain these patients’ symptoms had been that something had gone wrong with their logical abilities or their knowledge base,” Immordino-Yang writes, “such that they could no longer make decisions in a rational way. But, in fact, with further testing, it became apparent that these patients did not have a primarily problem with knowledge access, or logical reasoning, as had previously been assumed.” ( Immordino-Yang, 2016).

In the article Raichle, (2010), The Brain's Dark Energy , the brain odes not rest when one is at rest but it becomes more active when people go to sleep. During rest, the brain consumes 20% of the energy than when one is active. The high energy level consumed by the brain when one is asleep or at rests labeled as a black energy. According to the research in neuroscience, individual’s emotions helps one convert bits and pieces of our complicated world into a meaningful sense of information. For instance, for some people it is very easy to go back into our memory when trying to remember something we love, such memories are easy to recall since they are attached to emotions (Raichle, 2010).

More sleep is vital to the brain development and functioning of the students. If the students learn to schedule their time well so that they have time to rest it will be wise and that helps them to avoid speeding sleepless nights during the exam time. In the above articles, we learn that prefrontal cortex which is part of the brain is affected by the disrupted or insufficient sleep. Therefore, to avoid putting more pressure on the brain, the students need have sleep schedules regularly to better their grades (Krantz, 2018).

However, most students getting less grades since their long-term effects of lack of sleep does not affect them when they are still young, but it comes later in life. Most students only live now and forget about the future consequences that they cause on their body. The students only get worried about their current grades where they will spend the whole day and night. Later on the consequences of sleep deprivation appears when it is too late. The students should know that sleep deprivation is very dangerous and harmful to their brain and health

Conclusion

Sleep is very a very essential part of human life and it must be done in order for one to function normal during the day. Therefore, it is not well for people to sleep short hours or deprive themselves of sleep (Krantz, 2018).

This paper discussed the effects of sleep deprivation of the health and performance of the students. Research shows that most students do not get enough sleep because they say they are too buys or they spend it doing their activities and think it is the order of the day and the way to success. Such students spend a lot of time not asleep and they do not achieve academically when they come to class. Such students show low grades in their academic results. These indicates that lack of sleep reduces thinking and performance. According to most research results, sleep is directly associated with the level of performance and the health of an individual. Data reveals that most people who get enough rest and sleep think upright, remain healthy and perform best in their activities (Jabr, 2013).

The main problem that most people do not understand is how much time is required for one to sleep. According to psychologists, sleep varies from one person to another, but the accepted average time of sleep is between seven to eight hours while others say it is healthy for one to sleep at least for nine to twelve. The main point that psychologists recommend that sleep is important for people in order for people to perform to their maximum potential. There is no exception for the students as most of them deprive themselves sleep and later suffer from the health related conditions and fail in their exams. Apart from sleeping students are supposed to have enough time to rest from the daily routine so that they can enhance their physical performance, test-taking, thinking and memorizing (Krantz, 2018).
