According to McDaniels (2017), social media use affects the emotional and mental health of most young people. It is addictive and research has found that it causes depression, reduces the ability of an individual to have relationship skills, and increase anxiety. Survey report reveal that young people feel the pressure to compete with the life of other people they see on social media as well as posting a perfect photo. The reality is that photos are edited to hide the imperfections. The pressure to acquire the body image portrayed on social media has caused many teenagers to become self-conscious and develop confidence issues with their bodies.

Tanner (2017) points out that the increased cases of suicide among teenagers in the United States has been linked to social media usage. The suicides occurring currently in the U.S has been linked to posts on social media portraying “perfect” life others are living as well as cyber bullying. Cyber bullying has been associated to anxiety, depression, and high risk of cyber bullying. The perfect life on social media posts makes some young people feel left out. People post only the good things happening to them and thus makes a person feel worse if they are not living the life as depicted by others on social media. Social media contains everything including perceived failures and success, life situations, and physical appearance, which makes it challenging for a person to avoid comparing themselves to others. Therefore, the culture of comparison poses a negative effect on mental well-being of young people. The authors have stated clearly and accurately the main points and offered critical evidence to support their ideas.
