First Perspective
Like many other women in my world, I share a strong conviction that people have particular sports or hobbies for which they are extremely passionate. In my case, that sport was hockey. I cannot recall precisely at which point I became an avid hockey enthusiast, but it must have been a consequence of environmental factors. I was born and raised in an environment in which everybody wanted to associate with a particular rugby team. The neighborhood tournaments were thrilling because they brought together some of the most experienced players around. I always had a way of convincing our coach to be included in the first team. After all, I was ranked highly among our neighborhood’s best players. Unbeknown to me was the fact that I would soon incur an accident on the playing field, which would awaken me to the challenges that many people face in their lifetimes.
The tournament was scheduled for August because the schools had closed and most teams had trained sufficiently. It began without incident until the time came for the ultimate encounter with our archrivals. I was committed to deploying my best skills in the course of the game. We had been trained to master our trademark strategy of combining speed and skills. We all knew that it would be one of the toughest challenges, but we braced ourselves for the occasion nonetheless. After playing for about 20 minutes, I felt something snap in my knew and dropped to the ground in extreme pain. It was always dreaded such incidents because I did not know the severity of the injury. I have never wanted to be hospitalized because of a sporting injury because I had known athletes whose careers were ruined because of the length of time they spent in hospitals.

I felt myself lose consciousness and the voices around me grew fainter each passing minute. I was later informed that it was because of the hard impact of my fall on my head. Later on I resigned myself to the fact that I would be spending at least eight weeks in the admission ward. During that stay in the admission ward, I encountered extreme suffering that awakened me to the fact that many people live in extreme pain and misery. Had I not been admitted for that long I would still be thinking that suffering and death are remote realities that are only reserved for the unluckiest people in the world. I had the chance to check into a ward for the terminally ill patients and realized that may people have the quality of their lives devalued by disease and injury. I began appreciating the little things in life and resolved to deploy the full extent of skills to the development of my professionalism.
Another important lesson, which I learnt from the experience, is that many people have their professional capacities hindered by diseases and injuries. People must learn to embrace sound health do everything in their power to avoid diseases and injuries that can compromise their quality of life. In my view, it is not enough for people to enjoy the trappings of a rich life. What is necessary is for people to embrace healthy practices that would shield them from the various hazards that often incapacitate the lives of many aspiring professionals. It is inconceivable that anyone could enjoy a rich professional life when their health is in serious jeopardy.
I have since changed my attitude towards my profession after acknowledging the importance of sound health to professional growth. Nothing is more depressing like watching many young people languish in misery because they are incapable of prospering in their professions after incurring some injuries or suffering from certain diseases. The scenes I beheld in the various admission wards made me think that my case was insignificant because I was told that my injury would be fixed with a minor surgery. I formed a strong impression that sound health and happiness were greater than any material benefits for which anyone could aspire. I regard life seriously because I now understand that success in every endeavor is largely dependent on the quality of life. Ultimately, I have appropriated this observation to be part of my philosophy as I explore ways of prospering in my profession.
Second Perspective
As a woman, I have experienced certain things that made me reevaluate the meaning of life and the need to appreciate the many good things I take for granted. The triggering factor began life an injury on the hockey field but culminated into important lessons that I have since converted into my personal and professional philosophy. The tournament was one of the greatest events that everybody was determined to watch or play. We entered the field of play in earnest and embarked on the sport with the enthusiasm of determined players. The odds seem to favor our side for some minutes, but there were moments when we really thought that we would lose early in the game. Our fears were fueled by the fact that we were playing against one of the best teams and the tournament and the players had trained for several months. Every stage of the game was uniquely dramatic until the point came when I incurred an injury that made me unconscious.
I had never incurred an injury of that nature. I was afraid that I would have to spend several months in the hospital. I lost consciousness for about forty minutes because I had hit the back of my head very hard on the ground the moment, I suffered the knee injury. I was very focused on my personal injury to the extent that I did not spare any thoughts for the many people in the hospital wards whose lives have been ruined by diseases, accidents, and other injuries. I remember one of my friends who was always passionate about philosophy. She once told me that everything that happens in life is supposed to have a hidden lesson. I tried to think of the kind of lesson that I could learn from my injury, but it was not until I checked into the admission ward that the truth began unfolding in bits. I realized that there is a lot of suffering in the outside world and people must learn to empathize with others who have their lives denatured by the various unfortunate incidents that seem to lurk at every dark owner on the streets.
I saw many people in palliative care ward and pitied them because some had already resigned themselves to the fact that their lives were irreparably ruined. At some point, I used my crutches to access the cancer ward and witnessed the profundity of suffering that many men, women, and children have to endure at every turn of their lives. I pondered why God would allow people to suffer in such ways but settled on the view that certain truths are completely beyond my comprehension. I realized that there was a lot of suffering in the hospitals and people should learn to support the sick and the injured. The suffering that I saw all around me sharpened my perspectives on life and made me realize that good health should never be taken for granted. I made up my mind that I would always support any initiative, which is aimed at supporting the health of the society.
Conclusion
The two perspectives have some profound effect on my professional life because they made me acknowledge the importance of good health and happiness. I am willing to contend that a few aspects of my life were misaligned against reason because I tended to hold and share superficial views about what constitutes quality living. The first perspective makes me realize that I should focus less on the material qualities in life and instead focus on some of the inherent glories of good health that may not be perceived in a world that continues to become materialistic in every aspect. The second perspective awakens me to the need to show love and understanding to the sick and the suffering. I am certain that both perspectives will enhance my concentration in the liberal studies programs because they have already broadened my insights into a wide range of issues that relate to the good life and the need to liberate myself from the limiting effects of materialism.
