Verbal and non-verbal communications shape people’s interactions in interpersonal relationships and formal relationships (Parker, 2010). At school, verbal and non-verbal relationships are important in fostering strong relationships between teachers and students, teachers and other teachers, and students and other students. Verbal communications which involve the use of spoken words can help in classroom interactions to promote learning and allow students to understand concepts more effectively. Non-verbal communication involves use of gestures and body movements to communicate (Sidell & Smiley, 2008). This form of communication makes learning more interesting and improves students’ attention in the classroom (White & Gardner, 2012).
I plan to use the information learned in the course to communicate effectively in the classroom so that students can easily understand what they learn in class. I will also use the lessons from the course to promote effective verbal communication to attract attention from students and enhance effective listening and understanding of concepts (Hill, 2007). The lessons from this course will also help me to develop strong relationships with teachers using both verbal and non-verbal communication strategies learned in the course.

One of the areas of strength that will help me communicate effectively at school is the ability to use language appropriately. I am a good speaker with the ability to choose words effectively to attract attention and foster effective relationships. I also like to listen to others effectively in order to understand them and direct my communication towards achieving their needs. I also have an opportunity to use communication technology to make learning and interaction in the classroom more effective and interesting.
