According to the theory of cumulative disadvantage, the quality of life one leads in old age is influenced by the kind of life they have lived in childhood and young adulthood. When a discriminatory incident cumulatively affects the immediate outcome, it will also affect the future outcome, and consequently, have an effect on someone’s life, and his other generations to come. Something like the racial exclusion of a particular group which happened in the past that limited their potentials those times may negatively affect the accumulation of wealth for the coming generations affecting the group.

Someone’s upbringing will certainly have an influence on their economic and health status in their old age. This development will depend on the lessons that they are taught as well as the varieties of choices they make and the community where they come from. The community assists in availing resources and shaping someone’s life through. While this is true, it may not be true in every respect. A person’s situation cannot remain constant because sometimes certain factors may make life either better or not as good as expected over time.

In my view, retirement too soon is not a good thing. This is because, in many cases, people become detached from the community. I think that retirement is a period of frustrations, which is often marked by dwindling health and also rising limitations (Skerrett, 2015). Retirement actually changes everything. While some individuals make the change into a fulfilling period of retirement, many do not. This is because retirement to them is a life course transition that involves new social interactions, new environmental changes, and psychological stresses. This can affect the immediate quality life of the retiree. For those who take retirement positively, they gain in terms of physical and psychological health.

Some of the reason that may lead to retirement include retirement on health grounds, lower socioeconomic status, financial retirement, and full retirement. When the job is tiring and poorly paying, then someone may decide to retire very early. Depending on the type of life one chooses after retirement, someone may find it satisfying or frustrating. Someone who has a fulfilling relationship with his or her spouse has a higher chance of spending retirement years, having a happy home life. someone who often found an escape hatch by going to the place of work finds this time very depressing (Knoll, 2011).

McGarry (2004) claims retirement is a great, and a beautiful time for those who plan for it as opposed to those who do not. One only needs to focus life expectancy, marital status, and age of retirement, and organizes oneself for a fulfilling time after retirement; a time to be with the people you being together, and performing fulfilling activities. These are factors which might impact your ability to live the way you want in your old age.
